Mirko I think you are right. I will also be giving Redshift a try.

Yes *Jodi*. I started out in Maya in 2004 and have now been using it
exclusively since 2014. However with this lockdown I had an opportunity to
learn Houdini (finally) and I got re acquainted with Soft again and the
workflow just made me fall in love with it again. I was hoping to use Soft

That comment regarding all around app needs to be revisited more and more
often now. You can literally design your own workflow more and more these
days in Houdini, giving you workflows that you're familiar with while also
boosting it procedurally in other aspects.
By default, no, Houdini will
My only suggestion, do the homework now to learn Houdini or any other tool that
makes you happy… anytime now a driver or OS change will break XSI forever and
you won’t be able to produce at all.
If we are to compare things.. you are simply trading a bunch of great tools for
a different set of

Seems you already have you're own opinion about Houdini !
If Softimage ICE was in a separate app I bet you wouldn't use it so much.
Same goes if you choose to use Houdini and keep Softimage... too
cumbersome !
Houdini extrude = same click count than XSI ;-)

Yeah, well probably Softimage is laking a few things nowaday, but just try
importing a pointcloud from Houdini to Maya.
Here, we gave up, we ended up relying on Vray proxies ^^

And why not looking option for other way around, modeling and aall up to
lighting.shading rendering can be done in SI, then transfer them to Houdini.
Modeling, character animation, all that where Softiamge is still rather strong.
Then move to Houdini for lookdev, shading lightning and rendering.
if you want VDB files why are you using Alembic? I don't remember Alembic
supporting volumes, or did I miss something?
Regarding the other types of assets, meshes, transforms, etc. You're going
to find the lack of updates to Softimage is really going to start making
itself difficult. ie. format
I don't want to have to do 100 clicks to extrude a face with procedural
modeling. Even Maya modeling tools are better than Houdini's. There may be
some limited circumstances where procedural modeling is cool but not many.
The guy is looking for a workflow in Softimage/Houdini bcs he loves xsi.
I'm interested in that workflow too. Don't want to switch.
