I am completely new to Linux having just loaded on ubuntu to give it a try.
I am, therefore, a complete novice with this system and trying to find my
way around in a somewhat bewildered state!
The first problem is to try and get my Sppedtouch modem working so I can get
online.

The modem lights do not flash on boot up; they just come on a steady green.

The dmesg | less command reveals 100s of lines of info! However, an
initial visual scan reveals the following 2 lines:

The good news here is that I'm now e-mailing you via Linux! I've ended up
running the Network Configuration tool by clicking on the icon at the top of
the toolbar. I had to enter my details again manually and here I am online.
However, as Paul stated, I expected the modem to come
