[speedtouch] Re: Speedtouch and LAN with static IP and Gateway [Resolved]

2007-09-16 Thread C A Tomy

Hi Duncan,
The problem got resolved. As you suggested I disabled adummy in the kernel and
in addition enabled Lan Emulation Support. Then I configured nas0 with the
following command:

#br2684ctl -b -c 0 -a 8.35
#ifconfig nas0 10.200.3.190 netmask 255.255.0.0
#route add default gw 10.200.1.1

I thank you and Gilles for the suggestions that helped me resolve the problem.
The discussions with you two were indeed a learning experience for me.

Hi Tomy, I think the problem is that the packets are going to the adummy
driver. Here you can see that interface 0 is adummy:

 Itf TypeESI/MACaddr AAL(TX,err,RX,err,drop) ... [refcnt]

   0 adummy 0 ( 0 0 0 0 0 ) 5 ( 3988 0 0 0 0 ) [4]

   1 speedtch0090d04e4916 0 ( 0 0 0 0 0 ) 5 ( 0 0 0 0 0 ) [1]

And here you can see that 8.35 is going to interface 0:

Itf VPI VCI AAL RX(PCR,Class) TX(PCR,Class)

   0 835 5 0 UBR 0 UBR CLIP, Itf:atm0, Encap:None

   0 0 5 5 0 UBR 0 UBR

   0 016 5 0 UBR 0 UBR

I notice from dmesg that adummy appears early:

 netconsole: not configured, aborting
 adummy: version 1.0
 Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 7.00alpha2

so I'm guessing you have it compiled in. I suggest you don't
bothering compiling it at all.

Ciao,

Duncan.

I am working in one of educational institutions in India. It provides internet
facility through a 2 Mbps leased line (RF) connectivity with VSNL, India.
Internet services are provided through an external router and a firewall. Our
office computers are connected to a LAN through Ethernet. From the residences
on campus we are connected to the LAN through ADSL connection using Speed Touch
USB (green one).

The machine at my residence is a dual boot system with Gentoo and Windows XP. I
do not have any problem connecting the net from my window partition. The only
thing I needed to do was to install the driver and configure the adsl
connection by providing required TCP/IP values. There are no drivers avilable
for download at the website.

I am quite new this place and every one I know of uses Windows to access the
net from their residences. And there does not appear to be a community of
Linux users around.

Is it possible to make configuation based on br2684 that uses amarpd.
You do not need both together.
Both are parts of old 1483 and new 2684 RFC.
They are two different protocols :
- atmarp/atmarpd is for routed IP
- br2684 is for bridged ethernet
br2684 is courantly used with PPPoE but PPPoE is not the only br2684
solution. You should be able to use with a static IP (and maybe too with
dhcp / not so sure).

My network does not support dhcp. So what options are left for me?

Tommy

If so how is it done?
Some time back, I assumed my connection to be PPPoE and tried
to configure my connection. But this is what I got :

 localhost peers # br2684ctl -b -c 0 -a 8.35

  sleep 5
 br2684ctl[7028]: Interface nas0 created sucessfully
br2684ctl[7028]: Communicating over ATM 0.8.35, encapsulation: LLC
 br2684ctl[7028]: Interface configured
 localhost peers # ifconfig nas0 10.200.3.190 netmask 255.255.0.0
  sleep 10
localhost peers # route add default gw 10.200.1.1
localhost peers # pppd call speedtch
There, you should test :
- if pinging the gateway work,
- then test to ping numerical google IP 209.85.129.104
That will work if PPPoE is not required.
- then test www.google.com
that will work if dns are properly set

But where to give static gateway? And if it could be given, what is the syntax?

Hi Tomy,

 AAL5: tx 0 ( 0 err ), rx 0 ( 0 err, 0 drop )

this shows that no packets reached the speedtch driver, let alone
the modem - not surprising that you're not seeing much connectivity!
Something fundamental is broken in the way you have things configured.
Perhaps you could paste *exactly* the commands you used to configure
(with any output, errors etc). Also, it may be worth sending the
output of dmesg.

Read the first answer made by Duncan
It start with
This assumes your ISP is using routed ip.
It is probably not the case.

When I tried this method, though I failed to ping, at least I do not get
the error network not reachable. But I have so far not been sucessful
 with this method.
So, it seems the other option that is left for me PPPoA.

No
First PPPoA like PPPoE is always used with a login / password.
If you do not have both, this is the sign that it is not the protocol you
use.
Have you tried bridged ethernet and static IP?

br2684ctl -b -c 0 -a 8.35
ifconfig nas0 10.200.3.190 netmask 255.255.0.0
route add default gw 10.200.1.1
ping 10.200.1.1

ping 209.85.129.104

ping www.google.com
...
That takes me back to my original posting.
How to confiure PPPoA connection with static IP and static gateway.
That's never done that way.
Usually, you are authentified with your login / password.
Depending of the ISP settings, you receive an IP that is always the same or
a different oneat each time.

I know that I can give static IP of my mechine in /etc/ppp/options.
Yes theorically like you may have a ppp session without login /password.
But we never saw an adsl ISP configured like that.
There is a technical reason to authentification the connection on a network
shared by different ISP.
Authentification allow to redirect the traffic to the ISP corresponding
where the user have payed for.

But where to give static gateway? And if it could be given, what is the
syntax?
Gateway is usually received from ppp negociation.
Consider that if you don't have a login / password, you do not have
PPPo(A|E)

 VCI 35
 Type: RFC 1483B
 Encapsulation: LLC
 FCS: Automatic

I think you should not add 'null' to
 localhost tomy # atmarp -s 10.200.1.1 8.35 null

null equal VCMux encapsulation and you need LLC encapsulation.
As LLC/SNAP is the default encapsulation value for atmarp, you don't need to add
anything after, so that should be better with :

atmarp -s 10.200.1.1 8.35

Gilles

I tried both 'atmarp -s 10.200.1.1 8.35' and 'atmarp -s 10.200.1.1 8.35 null' .
But in either case, piniging my gateway is not sucessful.

Maybe you did not use routed IP.
Instead a configuration based on br2684 usage may be needed.

Have you tested to ping your gateway?
This allow to test only the connectivity without what may be a dns trouble.
Then test with 209.85.135.10 (that's resolve to google.com)

By the way, how do start my speedtouch adsl, after configuring atm0. Is there
something like pppd call speedtch that would initiate the modem.
