Now I know what the reason is. The log4j.jar must be in the tomcat/server/lib directory because the common.logging package needs it. First I would say this is a bug and I run tomcat under 1.4.1_01 and I think the common.logging package should use the logging package of jdk-1.4.1_01 shouldn't
