What does anybody know about the state of this technology?
Apparently it's come a long way since the old destructive
distillation of wood days. Now they make a mixture of CO and
H2, and use catalysts to turn that into methanol. If I could get
some of that to play with, I might even give up on

The SG results form my tests with pre-treated oil are as follows.
Note all are unwashed except for the normal brew sample:

Test 2, 25 mil (10%) methanol. SG 0.9051
Test 3, 32 mil (13%)

The above waffle reminds me of another question I have had bottled
up. In all the stuff I have read re-titration of oil it says to add 3
to 3.5 grams to the resulting mils and use this as your grams per
litre. With test batches I find I only need to add 1.4 grams to
titration
Have you read Beyond Growth, Herman Daly?

No I haven't. I know about it, but never got to read it. A must, by
all accounts. Unrestrained growth, yes, wonderful - we seem to
forget that the only form of life characterised by unrestrained
growth is cancer, and even that gets restrained when

Keith,
I could use an extra brain here for a moment.
But Todd, I haven't got an extra brain!

Dear All,
Am I right in assuming that the continuous processes for transesterification

overnight and run from, say, 9am to 5pm.

We, at a R D center did produce methanol from biomasse via
biogas and synthesis gas (H2 and CO, ...). It did work quite
well tough the efficiency isn't that high. I know an other
project in Germany where they produce methanol from syngas
from a gasification plant. So, this is feasible.

I just did some digging on the 3.5 gm/litre standard NaOH for virgin
oil, and got told it's an empirical figure, established by trial and
error, but it's quite reliable. The opinion was that you could get

Many people like it but the cost stops them.
What does it take to make bars of glycerine soap?

Glycerine soap requires an enormously liberal application of heat (to be
read fuel) in comparison to standard soap manufactuer.
Alcohol is also a key production ingredient, which is eventually evaporated
and seldom recovered by anyone but commercial scale manufacturers.

The only part I am interested in is the automatic control.
What kind of control was it?
Where was it installed?
Where was the sensor probe placed?
I am working on building a fuel grade still and would be distilling
larger volumes of wort. Wouldn't want to have to baby sit my still.
Hello Keith
Could you or Daniel give some detail on the process of producing
methanol from biogas.
Thanks

Some time ago I came across these plans and took an
interest just to see what other people were trying to
do. I was not impressed with the design or its
safety. True, it was not an expensive project.

The continuous systems that we build run 24 hours a
day. If you have a time problem just start the
batches at a later time so that they finish during the
time of the day that you want.
Hope that helps

Ken,
Those urging you to get a dose of reality need to observe their own
advice.
Yes, most methanol is a derivative of fossil fuels at present. Yet it
needn't stay that way, as green entremanures continually keep proving.
As well, ethanol for biodiesel manufacture poses some considerable

There's a strong undercurrent in the bio-diesel business at the moment, with
some pretty significant corporate interests trying to discern where all the
