[biofuel] 55 degs
Hi, My name is Christian and I«m quite new to this group. I«m currently finishing Environmental Engineering and to graduate, I must prepare a sort of thesis (actually, it«s not a thesis... it«s more of a thorough project). Anyway, I was thinking of preparing biodiesel to run it on the lab«s diesel engine (a small boat outboard... not much HP) and eventually test NOx and CO emissions. So the question is, in the two stage process, are the 55 ¼C essential, or can the temperature be roughly a bit more. Actually, for my batch low-volume process, I was thinking of heating the stew with a closed circuit of water in copper pipes or something, heated by a fish-tank water heater and pumped by a small aquarium water pump. Does anyone think this is feasible? What are the ordinary home methods of heating the mixture at 55 degs for over an hour? Does the initial heating of the brew (until it reaches the 55 ¼C) count as time? Thanx. Christian [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! [biofuel] Breaking Gridlock
Book Excerpt BREAKING GRIDLOCK We Can't Go On Like This by Jim Motavalli Mass transit is making modest overall gains, though it can be hard to get excited about increases that give cities bus and rail systems comparable to those they had in 1910. http://www.tompaine.com/features/2001/11/06/index.html Jim Motavalli is editor of E: The Environmental Magazine, and author of Forward Drive: The Race to Build Clean Cars for the Future, and the forthcoming Breaking Gridlock. Editor's Note: This is part I in a IV part series of excerpts from Motavalli's upcoming book Breaking Gridlock. Here, Motavalli examines our relationship with automobiles and their impact on our lives. In the new millennium, when the futurists said we'd all be wafting to work in sky cars, we're decidedly earthbound. According to Katie Alvord's book, Divorce Your Car!, a third of the average city's land is devoted to serving the car, including roads, service stations, and parking lots. In 1970, Americans drove a trillion miles per year; it's been more than two trillion since the mid-1990s. There are well over 210 million registered automobiles in the United States alone, and their numbers will soon overtake the human population. There are already more cars than there are American adults to drive them. Automotive fuel economy doubled in the 1980s, but fuel use continued to climb because of the increasing number of cars on the road. As cities sprawl farther into distant suburbs, daily commutes also spiral upward. An hour a day in the car has become the national norm. The average family takes ten car trips a day, mostly for shopping, socializing, or recreation. For every ten travel miles, nine are taken in a car. Every year, we use up 100 billion gallons of oil, more than half of it (56 percent) imported. If present trends continue, we'll be importing two-thirds of our oil in twenty years. As Alvord puts it, this isn't love; it's addiction. [more] Yahoo! Groups Sponsor -~-- Universal Inkjet Refill Kit $29.95 Refill any ink cartridge for less! [biofuel] Fw: VITA Request: Rice husk fuel
-Original Message- From: Bienvenido Sarria [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, November 13, 2001 11:22 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: information request November 13, 2001 To Whom It May Concern: My name is Bienvenido Sarria, I am a professor and researcher at the Center of Energy and Environmental Studies, at the University of Cienfuegos, Cuba. Our center is responsible for the development and implementation of alternative technologies in the area of energy and management in rural areas of the country taking into consideration the characteristics of the area and its natural resources. In various parts of our country we have several kinds of biomass available to use as a energy source for different process and the communities. Recently, we were given a task to develop a Pilot Plant to burn rice husk using Fluidized Beds technology. The intention is to use the rice husk available in the area to reduce the consumption of conventional fuels in the drying process of the rice and to produce electrical energy for the community where the rice plantations are located. Besides reducing the environmental impact this will also increase the employment positions available and will improve the living conditions of the area. This technology could be introduced in several communities in Cuba and Latin America where the biomass from agricultural crops are widely available, e.g. wood chips, sugar cane bagasse, among others. During the literature review we found that your organization, VITA, is a non-profit organization that support people working on technical problems in developing countries called VITA. From VITA webpage we understand that it offers information and assistance aimed at helping individuals and groups to select and implement technologies appropriate to their situations. Since we work in the area of energy and management we would like to know: Is there a possibility to have access to some relevant information for this specific project? Is there a possibility to have some financial support to develop this technology? Should we refer to some other person and/or organizations? But it could also be used, I guess, in biodiesel production, but only for small batches, where the slow process of manual filtration wouldn't be a problem. Re: [biofuel] Converting a diesel engine to vegtable oil
well, not quite. conversion to the vehicle needs to be done if you want to run straight veg oil. If you convert the oil to biodiesel, then you can run unmodified in many vehicles. older ones will need rubber/plastic fuel components updated with viton.
