John,
Would it not be better to map the extent of the flood plain rather than tag
individual road segments? I know they have mapped the 'floodplain' across
Victoria and then categorised it into probabilities ie 1:5, 1:10, 1:20, 1:50
and 1:100 chance of flood. Obviously its another thing getting
This is exactly my point and gets back to another thread from a few weeks
back regarding tagging schools and the sometimes multiple uses that each
building can have (ie after hours classes, church groups on a weekend etc
etc). From memory I believe that discussion was resolved by tagging

the area. The Melbourne showgrounds aren't a recreation_ground, likewise
with Bendigo. Well unless recreation includes purchasing showbags and eating
fairy floss :)

Well it appears as though people have been tagging them as
landuse=recreation_ground (as per Melbourne Showgrounds) which seems the
closest approximation to what it is.

The stream direction is very handy if you are doing network analysis, just
like one way streets are important to routing vehicles through a street
network. As with any data, its always best to code objects correctly in the
first instance to save time later. In some cases it is pretty difficult to
I agree this isn't a uniquely Australian tagging issue.
I went to Portugal a few years back and did sample some excellent ports in
Oporto. We took a tour through some of the cellars (large buildings where
they stored the barrells of port). They used the term 'cellar' to also

i much prefer the single object option ie move attributes to the polygon if
it is mapped. Just want to make sure that if/when these mass imports are
updated (ie caltex service stations etc) that any scripts will check both
point and polygon features.

The only DEM that I know about is the 9second product from Geoscience
Australia - http://www.ga.gov.au/meta/ANZCW0703011541.html It does cost $100
and probably has some stringent use/distribution limitations.
You want the DEM to produce a hillshade or to derive contours from? If you

I am starting to map landuse areas across Bendigo. I am wondering what to do
when (for instance) a petrol station has been mapped as a point with all the
attributes attached. I have now mapped the polygon representing the actual
area of the petrol station. Which attribute(s) should go on which
Stephen,
I am facing the same issue in Bendigo. I have been considering suggesting a
landuse=rural_residential tag. AS you state, these blocks are too small for
farming and are therefore still residential. In general, these sort of areas
are on the periphery of townships and are a transition into
across the southern states. Personally I don't like the
term, but if it is a majority consensus then I will fall into line :)

My argument is that a tax purpose is not a land use - you can run a small
business (tax purpose) from a residential address but it doesn't make it a
commercial property.

There appears to be some good data in the list. It is commendable that the

Some of the datasets are pretty course (VicMap Lite for example) and are

Chris,
That GA dataset IMHO would form a good base for national/state forests.
Looking at the metadata it is suitable at a 1:5 000 000 scale and therefore
a whole heap of small parks will be missing/totally inaccurate, but as I
said it would provide a base to start updating/adding missing parks
I think all the duplicates are removed in rural Victoria now.
Leave someone else to tidy them up in metro Melbourne.
I am not going to start on the USA duplicate removal, there is some definite
time effort required there :)

I know Bendigo has an 'alcohol free zone' which would be useful to capture.
Initial thoughts are that it is best represented as a relation, made up of
the ways (roads etc) that form the outer boundary. Just need to define a new

look at just relations when it comes to rendering them rather than tags and
