I'm sure I'm missing something, but how can I start a message to a user
from the OSM website? I'm in my profile, Im in my messages, but I don't
see an option anywhere to start a new message.
I have done it in the past, but that must have been from the old site.
What button am I missing?

just go to the user's site you want to chat with. There's a button Send
message ;)

where you write the user's
Wouldn't that be easier then to script for mass mailing and spam ?
