My focus is (in order):
1) roads (missing + aligning)
2) rivers / railway (missing + aligning)
3) landuse
4) city borders
On some parts (roads), sometimes I wonder about the actual road
I had the same question. Checked the wiki, and it seems everyone has
that question and there is no real answer.
I'm reusing nodes. This means it is a bit harder to edit (although it is
perfectly supported and possible by JOSM), but it gives a much cleaner
result on the map.

using Bing (and previously Yahoo) to correct ways and adding landmark
buildings in connection of the new material.
