To easily see if any message gets routed to that trash folder, the first thing you should is empty it. Since you had me poking around preferences I noticed that deletions under "Normal Deletions" was set to "Move messages to trash folder" which I would have thought meant the trash folder for that account. Since it didn't seem to work that way as evidenced by what happened this morning, I instead selected "Move to the specified folder" and then selected that account's trash folder. I have now done that for both accounts. If no further messages get routed to that orphan trash folder at the bottom of the tree, I'll eventually delete it.
