I am actually happy that the next release of KeySoft will allow people to start writing in Nemeth Code. I am still not quite clear how it will exactly display to reachers once it's been printed, but you can print assignments in Nemeth code and turn it in to your instructors. That is a definite step up. RE: DAISY Players; [Was Next Generation Braille Notetaker Just Released]
First you said there isn't any need for knowledge, then you said you have to configure stuff if you want something more, like for different reading environments. It's great, Dane, that you are proud of your technology. But it is also too bad you have to knock other people down for their technology choices. You can't beat free, and if you already have the screen reader knowledge to begin with (most people do because they have to use one with their DAISY player) then I would just accept you like your DAISY Pie better. Subject: Re: DAISY Players; [Was Next Generation Braille Notetaker Just Released] Big difference, we're talking about a system that doesn't require any knowledge to get it running, that's the main point, all the user need do with Daisy Pi is plug it in and turn it on, wait a few seconds and the user hears Daisy Pi Is Ready and at that point you read to your hearts content. You don't have to have a Screen Reader, you don't need to know how Windows 8 or any other operating system works etc. For want of a better way of putting it, Daisy Pi is like having a Book Sense, a Victor Reader Stream, A Plextalk etc, only difference being that the Pi can be configured for more situations and environments. Its unfortunate that we decided not to put everything into one box as is the case with something like the Book Sense, doing this just adds cost to the whole project and we wanted to make the whole thing as cheaply as possible, in affect all the user has to do is to purchase a Pi and other accessaries tuned to his or her needs. When we feel a little more confident with Daisy Pi and how its working we'll be offering to send out SD cards, these cards contain both the Daisy Pi software and the LYNUX operating service so all the user has to do is to insert the SD card, Plug In and Switch on. === The Techno-Chat E-Mail forum is guaranteed malware, spyware, Trojan, virus and worm-free To modify your subscription options, please visit for forum's dedicated web pages located at http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/mailman/listinfo/techno-chat You can find an archive of all messages posted to the Techno-Chat group at either of the following websites: http://mail.tft-bbs.co.uk/pipermail/techno-chat/index.html Or: http://www.mail-archive.com/techno-chat@techno-chat.net you may also subscribe to this list via RSS. At that time, they used thumb wheels and I hated the darn thing! I'm now the owner of a Focus40-Blue, and what a change of design philosophy since those days! They now use panning buttons and rocker bars and I have to confess I love it! It's a very nice display indeed now. I know I'm not all in favour of how Freedom does things. But on this occasion they've definitely scored a major hit in my opinion. The Braille display itself can be adjusted in terms of the firmness of the cells. The ability to move as per the speed of your reading is not unique, but it is a nice touch. The surface of the display is nice and smooth, which makes the Braille stand out. The charging, power usage and management are excellent. The unit is host-powered when connected to USB so there is no drain on battery. The unit is only self-powered when used with BlueTooth and even then you get an average of 20 hours continuous use before a recharge is necessary, according to Freedom. I've only had this since last Tuesday but didn't get the opportunity to try it properly until last night. I am very very impressed, well done Freedom Scientific on this one. This device was scheduled for release during the third quarter of 2016. However, dealers have had the device on order from Freedom since April, and have been constantly given different information as to availability. It has now emerged that not only is the device not going to meet its scheduled release date, but even dealers have not been issued test units, and the device has not even gone into production yet. UK dealership Sight And SOUND Ltd. today cancelled their order with Freedom for the units which customers have pre-ordered, and the device was removed from their website. It now look likely that the earliest release date for this device will be the second quarter of 2017. Sight And Sound has had no option but to refund those customers, (including myself) who pre-ordered the device. There Head Of Operations today called me personally to apologise for the none-delivery of the device, and he explained that Freedom is now involved in a dispute with the Russian developers who have failed to meet the required standards of proficiency for a Freedom Scientific subsiduary. So now, we have absolutely no idea when or even ic this device will actually ever see the light of day. For me personally, It isn't really a desaster. I'm going to look at other, more conventional and, of course, cheaper solutions which give me a small Windows-based machine which I can carry around with me to use as an ultra-portable device. I have a Focus 14 Blue, so I'm looking for a really small machine which packs a decent amount of power to boot. But I for sure will not be purchased an ElBraille, even if and when it does hit the streets. smime.p7s Description: S/MIME cryptographic signature

Its a real pity that Apple still won't embrace aptX with Bluetooth as that would make Bluetooth from an IOS phone absolutely fantastic and up there with most other manufacturers these days including Samsung, Asus, LG, Bowers And Wilkins etc. As far as the Jambox Jawbone goes? Well if you're happy with it then fine but its a pity because you just don't know what you're missing as there are other speakers out there the same size that offer so much more, Jambox Jawbone stuff is nothing more than gimmik. Hello, I just got a 2nd generation Echo Dot last Monday (this is my first Echo). I have to say I am really loving it. So far I hink it's the best technology investment since my iPhone two years ago. It didn't take me too long to set it up. People told me the Alexa app was going to suck. It is definitely not the most intuitive app ever invented, but I did get my Dot connected on wifi and signed up to my Amazon account. Then to amuse myself I went to different parts of my apartment and gave Alexa commands to see if she could hear me. I have a 700-square foot apartment. She could hear me in the kitchen, living room, and most of the hallway. My estimate is that's about half my apartment's size. What I like the best is the ability for Alexa to read Kindle books. When I use my phone app to read them I get interrupted because of whatever other notifications come in. Whatever text to speech engine they are using for Alexa, there aren't that many mispronounced words at all, and I think Alexa does a better narration than some other book narrators out there. I'ts just so much simpler to ask for things by voice also. I have at least 6 news sources hooked into my flash briefing now with probably more to come. RE: [Techno-Chat]: Amazon Echo
Hi Gordon, I already got it and can't live without it, so to speak. :) It's so much easier to get my news and stuff now with just my voice. I heard Apple is also coming out with a rival product. Life should get more interesting. Mary -Original Message- From: Gordon Smith [mailto:gor...@mac-access.net] Sent: Saturday, June 03, 2017 7:18 AM To: Techno-Chat ... Regarding the Echo, can I suggest that you hold off for a couple of months? My information is that the next generation of Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Tap aren’t far away. I have no information as to whether the hardware design will change radically, but I suspect it might. It has been speculatively mentioned by technical professionals that the next generation of Dot will include a rechargeable battery base, made by a company called Lantree. They already do a base for the existing Echos, and it’s the one I use at the moment. If the speculation is accurate, (and I distance myself from it as I have no factual verification), but if it is, then you may find it a better option to cut your losses and upgrade the entire Echo Dot. Yet another example of Caveat Emptor. ;-) My complements and kindest regards Gordon Smith: <gor...@mac-access.net> Accessibility & Information Technology Support Specialist.. My Dot just plugs into the wall. I will definitely look into that. And thanks for the link. Just go to http://alexa.amazon.com and sign in as usual, I have battery bases for my Echo and Echo Dot. I also use the voice remote a lot. I listened in the garden to some of my favourite books yesterday and after 5 hours of continuous use, the full size Echo on battery was still going strong. smime.p7s Description: S/MIME cryptographic signature
