Hi Gordon,

I already got it and can't live without it, so to speak. :) It's so much easier
to get my news and stuff now with just my voice.

I heard Apple is also coming out with a rival product. Life should get more
interesting.

Hello Mary

I must get around to writing to you off list, time for a catch-up I guess.
Regarding the Echo, can I suggest that you hold off for a couple of months? My
information is that the next generation of Echo, Echo Dot and Echo Tap aren’t
far away. I have no information as to whether the hardware design will change
radically, but I suspect it might. It has been speculatively mentioned by
technical professionals that the next generation of Dot will include a
rechargeable battery base, made by a company called Lantree. They already do a
base for the existing Echos, and it’s the one I use at the moment. If the
speculation is accurate, (and I distance myself from it as I have no factual
verification), but if it is, then you may find it a better option to cut your
losses and upgrade the entire Echo Dot. Yet another example of Caveat Emptor.
;-)

I allowed Alexa to access contacts in the Communications tab, and then I can

shape our future.

I was interested to read your observations on the Amazon Echo App, I have 3
Amazon Echo devices here, the main Echo, Dot and Tap, all of which had to be
setup online through a web page given the Amazon App isn’t available for IOS in
Australia through our Apps Store and to be frank I didn’t even check if the
Android App was available so I’ll go and take a peak in a few minutes.

I love the way various services can integrate with Amazon and Google, fir
instance I can tell Google or Amazon to turn various appliances on and off in
my house.

Perhaps you might like to try some of the new Amazon Echo skills that allow the
making and receiving of phone calls, the sending of SMS messages, the ability
to listen to Old-Time radio Drama and so the list goes on.

Hello Everybody

As you may be aware, Freedom Scientific and Russian developer, "Elitech"
recently merged, so that the latter could use the Freedom Scientific
facilities and market their ElBraille device.

This device was scheduled for release during the third quarter of 2016.
However, dealers have had the device on order from Freedom since April, and
have been constantly given different information as to availability.

It has now emerged that not only is the device not going to meet its scheduled
release date, but even dealers have not been issued test units, and the device
has not even gone into production yet.

UK dealership Sight And SOUND Ltd. today cancelled their order with Freedom
for the units which customers have pre-ordered, and the device was removed
from their website. It now look likely that the earliest release date for this
device will be the second quarter of 2017.

Sight And Sound has had no option but to refund those customers, (including
myself) who pre-ordered the device. There Head Of Operations today called me
personally to apologise for the none-delivery of the device, and he explained
that Freedom is now involved in a dispute with the Russian developers who have
failed to meet the required standards of proficiency for a Freedom Scientific
subsiduary.

So now, we have absolutely no idea when or even ic this device will actually
ever see the light of day.

For me personally, It isn't really a desaster. I'm going to look at other,
more conventional and, of course, cheaper solutions which give me a small
Windows-based machine which I can carry around with me to use as an
ultra-portable device. I have a Focus 14 Blue, so I'm looking for a really
small machine which packs a decent amount of power to boot. But I for sure
will not be purchased an ElBraille, even if and when it does hit the streets.

I have to admit the boost in sound quality when I upgraded from the 5S to the
6 was a huge plus and worth the upgrade for that reason, Apple have - in my
view with the 6 and 6S at least - some of the best sounding internal speakers
available on a mobile phone.

Its a real pity that Apple still won't embrace aptX with Bluetooth as that
would make Bluetooth from an IOS phone absolutely fantastic and up there with
most other manufacturers these days including Samsung, Asus, LG, Bowers And
Wilkins etc.

As far as the Jambox Jawbone goes? Well if you're happy with it then fine but
its a pity because you just don't know what you're missing as there are other
speakers out there the same size that offer so much more, Jambox Jawbone stuff
is nothing more than gimmik.

Yes, I've used one and I had the greatest pleasure in throwing the unit into
the recycle bin a couple of years ago I think it was.

the iPhone 7S or 7S Plus. I know that there's been much talk on our sister

Hi!

I'm working on my iPhone at the moment installing and uninstalling Apps.

It's amazing what you get used to when using an Android device and what you
then find sadly missing on other devices such as IOS defectives.

For example I'm very used to the idea of installing or uninstalling Apps and
then restarting an Android device - rebooting if you like - from the screen
that's presented when the power button is held down, I start using my iPhone
only to find that the restart option is lacking so I have to go through the
whole shutdown feature, turn the phone on again and wait for the phone to
restart, it's all very time consuming so I sincerely hope that Apple will
add a few options to the "Power Off" screen in the new version of IOS,
options such as Restart, perhaps Airplane Mode, Emergency Calls etc, I don't
think this is too much to ask.

Yes, I know about the emergency reboot function of IOS but that's not really
want a what .

Hi all

Around 3 or 4 years back, I had the opportunity of trying a Focus 40 Braille
display. At that time, they used thumb wheels and I hated the darn thing!

I'm now the owner of a Focus40-Blue, and what a change of design philosophy
since those days! They now use panning buttons and rocker bars and I have to
confess I love it! It's a very nice display indeed now. I know I'm not all in
favour of how Freedom does things. But on this occasion they've definitely
scored a major hit in my opinion.

The Braille display itself can be adjusted in terms of the firmness of the
cells. The ability to move as per the speed of your reading is not unique, but
it is a nice touch. The surface of the display is nice and smooth, which makes
the Braille stand out.

The charging, power usage and management are excellent. The unit is
host-powered when connected to USB so there is no drain on battery. The unit
is only self-powered when used with BlueTooth and even then you get an average
of 20 hours continuous use before a recharge is necessary, according to Freedom.

I've only had this since last Tuesday but didn't get the opportunity to try it
properly until last night. I am very very impressed, well done Freedom
Scientific on this one.

Kind regards

First you said there isn't any need for knowledge, then you said you have to
configure stuff if you want something more, like for different reading

is also too bad you have to knock other people down for their technology

Big difference, we're talking about a system that doesn't require any knowledge
to get it running, that's the main point, all the user need do with Daisy Pi
is plug it in and turn it on, wait a few seconds and the user hears Daisy Pi
Is Ready and at that point you read to your hearts content.

You don't have to have a Screen Reader, you don't need to know how Windows 8 or
any other operating system works etc.

For want of a better way of putting it, Daisy Pi is like having a Book Sense,
a Victor Reader Stream, A Plextalk etc, only difference being that the Pi can
be configured for more situations and environments.

Its unfortunate that we decided not to put everything into one box as is the
case with something like the Book Sense, doing this just adds cost to the whole
project and we wanted to make the whole thing as cheaply as possible, in affect
all the user has to do is to purchase a Pi and other accessaries tuned to his
or her needs.

When we feel a little more confident with Daisy Pi and how its working we'll
be offering to send out SD cards, these cards contain both the Daisy Pi
software and the LYNUX operating service so all the user has to do is to insert
the SD card, Plug In and Switch on.

Hi, Gordon

From what I understand, UK math Braille is different from Nemeth code, which
is the ystem of math Braille the uS has adopted. But yes, it's a system of
math braille.

 Hi Roger

OK, we need a service where we can legally download FLAC audio music, rather
than the compressed stuff that you get from iTunes, Napster and that kind of
site. We think we've just found one actually, and Lynne is creating an
account. It is a massive provider supposedly the biggest in the world. They
have 24-bit and HD music as well. Looking at their index there are literally
thousands of artists so it looks promising.

I'll let you know how Lynne gets on, but it might be exactly what we need.

 Kind regards
