Dear Julian,
when you are new to using MusiXTeX, why don't you have a look at PMX?
PMX is a very comprehensive and readable input language for a program
called PMXAB.EXE, which then generates MusixTeX input.
You will find an excellent introduction to PMX by C.C. Noack under

Dieter: Julian wasn't having problems with MusiXTeX
commands. His problems (resolved off-list) were:
+ using 32bit MiKTeX on a 64bit Windows system
+ using etex rather than latex for a latex score
+ using blank
not a problem, is it?
(unless Miktex is a well known exception?)

|system is usually not a problem, is it? (unless Miktex is a well known
|exception?)
Julian: I've heard that there can be problems but don't know
whether MiKTeX (or specific commands in MiKTeX or specific
versions of Windows) are
that rule, you'll already know why (if you see what I
mean!)
