or .xpi file is corrupted in lp?
When on lp I click on the link to the file, I can D/L a corrupted 3 kb file,
and by clicking on the D/L-symbol to the right,
I get the correct 57 kb file.

There is a confusion about the term attachments:
one attachment relates
Follow this steps.
select anm mail and open archiv to openerp window.
search for partner name instead of default email id.
press search key.
you will get partner record in list.
select that partner and press attachment button.
now open that partner form view and check attachment.

Yes, clicking on that opens a new screen, but there are no records at all,
although I pushed the Attachement-Button on the Thunderbird-applet while
selecting the same partner record.
So something does not work here...

When you search for mail id it will search in partner.address and display
records of partner address.
If you select a record of partner address and attach a mail you should check
that address from PartnedPartner Address menu.
The mail will be in attachment of that address.
There is a button called Attachments on main top toolbar.

am running on windows)
- zipped it up
- uninstalled the old module in ERP
- imported new zip
- installed it again

yes, I took that one and it works on my system. Right click on email,
contextmenu Archive to openERP and a small window pops up. There is already
the email in the field and I can choose where to look for openERP records: as

First choose a case and then use the button create case and the email will be

You don't have to make any zip.
Simply copy the entire directory of modules you need, or your find interesting
on server/bin/addons.
Then from client side menu go to administration, modules, upload.
Then open modules list and find the one you want to install. That's all..
