Same problem for me - no Window Manager when my session logs in. I can
start compiz manually from System-Preferences-Appearance-Visual
Effects. Other user's don't seem to be affected, although possibly they
aren't using desktop effects.

The HP Deskjet d2500 series of printers are only supported from hplip 2.8.5
while Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy) includes hplip 2.8.2
Probably it is possible to select a similar printer driver to make it work,
please share the workaround you used.
