after much testing, I went to check the sound settings, and one of the
sliders was set all the way to the top, making the sound come out
garbled. If you have a similar problem, have a quick look at your sound
settings and see what the sliders are set to. Being as I did not set
these settings

upon updating kernel during the ubuntu gutsy to heron upgrade (version
7.10 to 8.04), the sound drivers seem not to function as they did in the
older kernel. the sound comes out all garbled and sounds like my sound
