The 18 month support period for Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 has reached its end of life -

linux-source-2.6.22 kernel task. It would be helpful if you could test the
new Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 release and confirm if this issue
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:
1) If you are comfortable
I reconfirm this bug in Kubuntu Gutsy kernel version 2.6.22-15 and add
an additional data point:
If I boot without the kernel option irqpoll, these error messages don't
appear in the kernel log. However, after a while, the CDROM drive stops
responding anyway, and the USB system dies for some
man hdparm:
-w Perform a device reset (DANGEROUS). Do NOT use this option.
It exists for unlikely situations where a reboot might otherwise be
required to get a confused drive back into a useable state.
Is it really save?
I confirm this bug: when its empty, accidentally my DVD-ROM is going mad,
With -w, i had some freezes, but not all the time.

I have had similar problems with gutsy .But on the same ide, I had
another cdrom, after keeping alone the LG cdrom on the IDE it was
working perfectly.
However after upgrade to hardy new bad things came
/dev/hdc replaced with /dev/scd0 and looks like some cd do not work very well,
empty media

I can confirm this defect in Gutsy - I am having exactly the same issue.
I have noted that it only occurs if I boot the system with a disc in the
drive. If I reboot, remove the disc and boot up again, the issue is
resolved and I can start using the drive again.

Thanks for your update. I'm glad that a newer version of the Hary
release candidate will be available soon. However, I have a means to
burn DVD's currently and do not want to test out the Hary release
without consideration for its potential impact on my now-working DVD
burning system.
Hary Alpha4 will be released in a day or so. It will have an updated
version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron
Alpha release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/ . You
should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. Please
verify if this bug still

The plot thickens. I too encountered the above mentioned failures after
a hard drive failure forced me to update to 7.10. The irony is that I
installed Gutsy from a CDROM burned on the exact hardware/firmware that
now can only brick DVD/CDROM media.

CONFIG_PATA_JMICRON=m
Now the DVD-RW-Device is no longer detected as /dev/hdb, it is detected
as /dev/scd0 correctly.

Pardus, but can't read it with kubuntu feisty fawn.

DVD burning did not work at all (brasero, gnomebaker)
Finally updated firmware on my GSA-4167B to Dangerous Brothers DL13. Works
like a charm.
I suggest you check for new firmwares.

I have the same problem. After trying to write a DVD with k3b, I could
see the same messages as Achraf in /var/log/messages (except that my
DVD+-RW is hdd, not hdc). After that, no DVD - written or blank - is
recognized in the unit. So I can't read any DVD, nor I can burn another
blank.
