Clicking on floppy gives no device media found
I narrowed down the issue to the linux-backports-modules-alsa-lucid-
generic specifically linux-backports-modules-alsa-2.6.32-24-generic
Once I removed the alsa backports modules from the 2.6.32-24 kernel the
cpu lockup issue did not occur.

I have made a strange observation, it may be helpful to others:
Since i double boot, i have no more hang. Double boot means: I interrupt the
booting by hitting ctrl+alt+del during the kernel initialization phase, which
causes the machine to reboot, and the second time i let it start normally.

When the partition manager shows the available disk and its partition
sizes it wrongly reports 0.0B as the partition size.

In that tutorial I address the need to inform the guests in advance, but
I also let them know that they actually can save files persistently.
