@Jonas. my problem was broken gconf environment after automatic
distribution upgrade.
That is the kind of thing that does not happen to the new user, because
he isn't likely to distro-upgrade from 8.4 to 8.10 now

Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: likewise-open
Windows based domain clients change their machine password on monthly
basis. Machines where likewise-open is installed never do this, this is
causing special scripts which are detecting inactive machines to remove
them from domain.

I'm unsubscribing from this bug. I find it hard to understand why some
people have such a difficult time respecting the explicit request not to
turn this ticket again into a support forum. There's the answer tracker
and the forum for these kind of things. We're now again one step
further away
This only seems to affect the amd64 Version of Ubuntu 10.10
I tried with a 32bit Installation in Virtualbox - everything is OK.

We have imported this on the Debian side to version 3.5.2-8 (not
uploaded yet). Nevertheless next time Ubuntu merges with Debian, this
patch will be included.
Thanks for a detailed report and finding the patch,
