The apparent culprit is /etc/fonts/conf.d/10-hinting-slight.conf from the binary package fontconfig-config (source package fontconfig); Firefox uses the settings from this file instead of using the desktop's settings. Removing that file brings back the correct behavior (hinting matches desktop).

I have the same problem with HP TC1100 and can give some additional information. 1. This is caused by the update from Hardy to Intrepid, kernel 2.6.27-8-generic 2. /sys/power/pm_test succeeds up to core 3. The computer hibernates fine but doesn't come back. I debugged the boot process and found
