3 additional times update-manager said a partial upgrade was
recommended. I answered yes, and it installed and removed some stuff.
However now whenever I run update-manager it still offers a partial
upgrade, but each time I do it stops with Your system is up to date.
There are no upgrades
ahh, there were 5 packages held back for some reason (gparted, esound-
clients and dependents). I used synaptic to upgrade them manually and
now update-manager is happy.

partial upgrade, which I said yes to. After that I seemed to have been
finally upgraded to 10.4. However after reboot the display was broken,

While I was typing this bug report two Update Manager dialogs popped up. I did
nothing to summon them.
One is a warning, Not all updates can be installed, run a partial upgrade to
...etc
The second is Software updates are available for this computer, New Ubuntu
release '10.04 LTS' is available,
how can this bug possibly be marked invalid??
I had a system running just fine 9.04, answered yes to upgrade to
9.10, went through that process for awhile, rebooted, and now the only
way I can use my computer is ssh in from remote because the local
display is either flickering like mad or
this is what got my system working again:
* ssh in from remote
* delete existing /etc/X11/xorg.conf (this step may not have been needed)
* download from nvidia.com the NVIDIA-Linux-*.run for your hardware and
copy it to your PC (I did it with a second PC and transfered via scp)
I've dist-upgraded to 9.04 and now the problem has, thankfully,
disappeared.

Virtualbox OSE also goes haywire with ram useage; I let it use up over
2gb before killing the process (no point in letting it get to the point

looks the same as for vlc and k9copy.

For the previous xorg log I killed the runaway process (k9copy) when it
had consumed 98% of the ram. I am running it again now and am letting it
take the full course. The display is now frozen, the mouse cursor does
not respond to movement, even the keyboard has stopped responding to
caps and
I waited 13 hours, with no visible change from this morning: screen
blank, no response to mouse or stylus movement (though both devices'
LEDs light up when moved), hard drive light steady and audibly chugging
away. I was mistaken about there being no keyboard response: there was,
only with about a

I managed to get ia32-libs installed yesterday by apt-get remove
lib32ssl0.9.8 first; I swear added that note to this bug report but I
don't see it. {shrug}

I've managed to replicate the working preview thing:
1) enable forcenibble
2) preview in grey-scale mode. **works**
3) scan **works**
and the first few rows thing:
1) enable forcenibble
2) preview in colour, **stalls after 2 seconds**

This bug also affects me. In addition to losing the mouse visibility
when logging out or restarting with ctr-alt-bkspc as others have
described above, it also happens sometimes when switching users.
My video card is an nvidia geforce 6150, I'm running Fiesty 64bit on AMD.
I've tried vesa, nv and
sudop apt-get upgrade worked, until a point. Prior to the error below
there was a dialog about ignoring the multiple swat entries in
inet.d/conf, for which I answered affirmative (yes ignore).
