changed BIOS to parallel port setting to ECP. Now starting xsane as user reports no devices available. Starting xsane as root takes about twice as long to start, says there are no devices available, and then about half a second later the scanner gives it's little wake up dance. -- canoscan

apt-get dist-upgrade completed this time around with no errors. However I am still unable to turn the computer off or reboot it. I eventually figured out I could get the menus back by using [ctr-alt-backspace] to kill the Xserver, and then at the resulting login prompt change the Session back
