Your result sound familiar to what I've seen during testing different
module settings, so with luck one setting might work across
distributions.
You might be interested in testing options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
,dell-vostro position_fix=0,1 too. Jack plug sensing have worked
without problems
Update: The above worked for me for a while, and now I can not get it to
work anymore. I apology for the spam.

@arno: Does it make a difference if you try options snd-hda-intel model

Yes, I found the drivers to be somewhat sensitive. If I run GDM3 and
liquorix kernel from liquorix.net I loose jack plug sensing (using
startx works fine however). Left and right works in head phones, but
not from internal speakers - I only have left speaker. Mic still not
tested. [Debian
Sorry about posting several times in a row, but I've found out that
options snd-hda-intel model=,dell-vostro is working in Debian unstable
with this sound card and I got jack plug sensing. The difference is the
comma between equal sign and dell-vostro. I didn't know it made a
difference so I
I tried my own suggestions this evening and installed Ubuntu 11.04.
Specifying sound card model dell-vostro did not help at all, neither
did trying one of the other ones as well. Strangely, there where no
changes in available options in alsamixer too.

I have an Atheros wireless card and I use the same work around in

Update:
Logging out and restarting GDM or logging in without Pulse Audio service
enabled did not help. But suspending to ram and waking up machine again
brought sound back for me.

I can confirm a crashing XFCE4 battery plugin, but I don't know what is
causing it and I haven't found a way to reproduce it. Sometimes I notice
the plugin has disappeared after I boot up the machine from hibernate.
Logging out doesn't bring it back, so I need to add it manually. I use
hibernate
I can confirm this in feisty: Xubuntu, used stock bcm43xx-fwcutter
script from repositories. Not tested very throughly thought since my PB
mostly serves its time as an Ethernet connected server. I have a WPA2

I might confirm this. Suspend button (Stand by) works, hibernate
doesn't. However I am not in a fresh boot and I am on a Dell Latitude
