Hi Dierre I think this is due to your video out setting of gmplayer being set to xmga. Launch gmplayer (type gmplayer in a terminal), and right-click the main window, choosing Preferences. In the video tab, note that the top option is highlighted (xmga). This doesn't work with all systems.
