Same problem here, but on sata disks. No USB. Running amd64 Karmic but
with 2.6.28-11-generic kernel from Jaunty, as the 2.6.30 fails to boot
on my box.
$ ps wwaux|grep blkid

The patched util-linux from Daniel Hahler in bug #377395 fixed the
problem for me. The kernel no longer uses 5 minutes to boot, and there
are no long running blkid processes anymore. The patches are only in his
private repository so far, so you need to add that to your sources to
install. Do
