When you double-click, the character is inserted immediately and you stay in
the Special Characters dialogue, so you can then just double-click the next
character(s). When you're done, you click on Cancel to exit from the dialogue.
At least that's what's happening for me in LO

Yes, I read that. But it doesn't make it easier - in fact it makes
it much more difficult. Before I could single click on anything
