Re: [libreoffice-users] Machine Translations

2016-04-02 Thread Gordon Cooper

With our present method of translating at html level
Googletranslate retains nearly all the document structure,
links, text format etc. Some of this is lost when pasting
into Libre Office meaning that each language has to be
edited separately. Am hoping for a way of translating
in LO and avoiding repetitive editing.

Had looked through the LO extensions but not found one
that could do this task in many languages. Was not aware
of Anaphraseus and unsure (yet) if it will run on Debian based
Mx-Linux.

[libreoffice-users] Machine Translations

2016-04-02 Thread Gordon Cooper

Hello, am a new member here. We are developing documentation for Linux
and using Google to translate into over 15 languages. Each machine
translation is corrected by member of the team, working in Libre Office
before

release.

At present the translations are done in html with code added to an
html editor.
Then we copy paste into LO where each one is manually corrected to fix
image

scaling, Table layout and internal linking. It would be much easier if the
translating could be done in Libre Office. Has there been any work on
adding machine translate code to LO?

Gordon.

2016-05-13 Thread gordon cooper

Hello Dale,
I have not met this problem (yet!). If you create a
hyperlink to a pdf document, but without the 'a' unfinished indicator
I take it that the hyperlink remains unchanged regardless of the
file being accessed again. It appears to be an issue with the single
character. Perhaps if you omitted the final underbar so that the
link read 8a instead of 8_a. The 'a' could be deleted when the
document is complete, just as you are doing now.

I know that this does not tell you why this occurs, but it might cure it.
Am working with hyperlinks while editing multi-lingual translations of
a system manual and have met several unexpected issues. Yours may
be yet to come!

I have many Writer files containing hyperlinks to PDF documents on my hard drives. The problem only occurs when I create a hyperlink to a document still being added to
such as "Dockets_1896-1897_08_a.pdf." The hyperlink looks fine in Writer when I create it, but when I come back to the Writer file some hours or days later the
visible hyperlink has changed to "Dockets_1896-1897_08 _a .pdf" where the spaces between "08" and "_a" and between "_a" and
".pdf" are so narrow as to be almost invisible, and where"Dockets_1896-1897_08" "_a" and ".pdf" are three separate hyperlinks,
all with the original destination.

After finishing the additions to the document I change the filename, destination, and hyperlink to
"Dockets_1896-1897_08.pdf" (the "_a" is only there to show that the PDF is not yet
complete) and never again have a problem with that hyperlink. What is puzzling is that only some of the
hyperlinks with the "_a" suffix suffer from this problem - not all of them. Any ideas?

Re: [libreoffice-users] Cannot edit a template ott file

2016-10-07 Thread gordon cooper

Ken,
I'll admit to not knowing LO very well, do most of my work
in Lyx, so one of the guru's may correct me.

I believe that your problems are in the save procedure. When you edit
one of your custom templates, LO will be handling it as an .odt, which
is normal. If you do a Save As .ott you'll be asked where to put it.
Unless
you specify exactly where, your edited template will probably be saved
somewhere
in Documents and thus will _not_ be recalled if you type Ctrl+Shift+N.
It thus

appears to you that the edit has not worked.

For your template to be selected by Ctrl+ etc. it needs to be saved in the
Users Templates sub-folder. This is vaguely explained in the Help. Look
at Tools>Options>LibreOffice>Paths for the exact address.

Gordon.

Ken,

Well, you can do that. But I think it will become a document

than documents in LO, so you can't just open and save them like
documents.

Yes, I was aware of the difference.

  No, the best

way to edit templates is through the Template Manager.

Agreed. That is what I am trying to do.

From the main page (no open documents) try Templates > Edit
Templates and select the template you want to edit.

Presumably after selecting the wanted template the last step is to
click on the "Edit" button at the top of the window. That is what I
cannot do; clicking on the "Edit" button produces no result; the
desired template does NOT open. Reporting this problem was the reason
for my original post.

Or if a document is open, use File > Templates > Manage. In the
Template Manager, select the template to edit then select the
"Edit" button to open it for editing.

In this situation I get the same result. Clicking on "Edit" does NOT
open the Selected template.

When you save the edited template, use the Save or Save As button
as you would a document.

I would dearly like to get to this point.

There are probably other ways to do this, but I think the key here
is to make sure you open the template with the Template Manger, not
like a regular document.

I would also dearly like to open the template manager to allow me to
create a new template or edit an existing one. What other ways exist?

I have managed to save a template from an existing document, but I
cannot edit such a template for the reason several times already
described.

There is some odd going on here. I don't use LO very
often, most of my writing is done with Lyx, which then outputs as a
PDF and I print from there. Have just looked at LO and found that
when it was asked to print, to either my little Brother laser,or an
elderly HP Deskjet, the landscape paper option was greyed out,
just like yours. These results came on a desktop, running MX-15
Linux. Looked as if LO was deciding that the files would fit onto
portrait and not giving me the option to change.

I'll do some more digging. Think I have LO on a laptop with XP,
will dig it out .Perhaps somebody else will pop upon the forum
with an answer.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Transferring Markdown Documents to LibreOffice

2016-11-20 Thread gordon cooper

To divert a little, but not talking about Markdown.

We were looking for a simple way of of producing documents in html,
thought we were on the right track until some of the potential users
asked for pdf too. We now use Lyx for the authoring, it produces
formatted text, without formatting marks having to be typed in.

From the Lyx master, we output in pdf and html, with DVI and xhtml
available as options. Where Open Document format is needed, the html
can be directly pasted in to .odt, but with one failing. A Table of Contents
in Lyx loses the page links in the paste function . There is an easy
work-around, just create a new ToC in Libre Office - about 4 clicks,
and delete the original ToC.

Hi Tim,

What I do is unpack the install files [I use .deb files] and place
them all in a temporary folder I call "lib". Nice and simple, I
have that folder in the "home" folder called "timothy".

This will give me "/home/timothy/lib" while using the file manager
  package [on Mint] called "Caja".

Then I use the "Mate Terminal" [default command line for the MATE
desktop GUI]

This is my starting point for this laptop - yours will look
different since you will not have the same laptop and user name.
This is the default user folder for my laptop.

timothy@Gateway-NE56R12u:~$

I type in "cd lib"

timothy@Gateway-NE56R12u:~$ cd lib

I get this folder shown

timothy@Gateway-NE56R12u:~/lib$

At this point I use this command to install all of the .deb files
from that folder. I tend to place both the language and help .deb
files - if needed - in a different folder like lib2.

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

This will prompt me to five my superuser password. Then it will
start a "long" install process for all of the .deb files in the
folder. The RPM system would have some different names for the
commands I use for the DEB based Linux OS [ I use Ubuntu with Mate
desktop]

So, if you have a folder off your home folder [or directory] with
the name of "lib" [home/timothy/lib], the command line is a very
easy route.

cd lib

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

After looking for this in the web I would make it the same way you
have described here. It's a little bit different to the tool, which is
delivered with OpenSuSE for system-managing with YAST, but it will
work well.
Don't know how to add a dircetory as repository in other sytems. But
with OpenSUSE it works well.

This installation method all looks overly complicated to me, and is one

Re: [libreoffice-users] Stepping through bulleted items in Presentation

2016-12-17 Thread gordon cooper

Have made several Presentations, mostly intended for remote
viewing and so including sychronised voice-overs.

Never found the bullet stepping technique that you wish for, but have
saved time and effort by first making the full slide, with all lines
finished, then copy it the number of times required and finally
step through the set and delete the unwanted lines. Have found
that this avoids some repetition, the layout and any fiddling with
spacing etc., is done only once.

The stepped bulleting may be possible in Lyx Beamer, but do not
have it on this machine, so cannot be sure.

create as many duplicate slides as I have bullets.

I'm wondering if there is another way to do this without the need to
create several slides. If I have 6 bullets, that means creating six
slides to get the stepping effect through the bullets.

What I'd like to do is create one slide with all six bullets, and then
tell LO to step through them during my presentation. Is there a way to
do this?

I am with Gabriele, do not understand the problem.

Here, We are working with moderately sized documents in several
languages. The Copy and Paste works every time. Can copy a
technical manual, with up to 170 A4 pages and nearly 100 images,
and it pastes correctly. Slightly more difficult is pasting from an
HTML document. Everything behaves, and the format is retained,
except the internal linking for the Table of Contents. This is no great
problem. Libre Office has the function to create a new Table Of
Contents linked to the appropriate pages in the resulting .odt.

All very easy.

There is a single paragraph break under the last line, and then about

Interesting note. Viewing in "Normal" view. If I switch to "Web" view,

At the bottom of this tab in the "Options" tic "Do not split paragraph".
If this is not available clear the tics in "Orphan control" and "Window

paragraph".

Now go back through your document with "View > Non-printing characters"

With "Do not spit paragraph" enabled your paragraphs will not split

If I go to the last paragraph and hit delete twice it will generally
draw up the paragraph from the next page. I then hit enter twice and
the new paragraph stays on the page. Since my paragraphs are short I
can do that a few times on each page.

This issue is that I'd rather not do that several times on each of a
hundred or so pages. Is there anything else I can look to check?

Virgil,
I will possibly be classed as an heretic and ready to be
broken on the wheel for
writing this on an LO user list, but IHMO there are much better ways of
assembling a

slide presentation than using Libre Office.

These days, I use one of the video editors, e.g. OpenShot, to make a
synchronised slide
program. The audio is recorded as a continuous sound track, then the
images are dropped

in over the sound, Perhaps it is a voice-under?

However, to answer your query, here is how I worked with LO, and it is
streets ahead of our methods
used 40 years ago, where the audio editor was a razor blade plus a roll
of quarter inch adhesive
tape. Then, the images were 35mm slides, text slides were drawn, then
photographed, and we
prayed that the processing laboratory would not change fluids while
developing our film, thus
introducing colour shifts. On one job they did lose 2 36 shot-films from
a 30+ batch, ruining a
week's work for 2 of our team who were making a training tape/slide
program about measuring

water quality in remote lakes and rivers!

Libre Office. The basic system allows the recording of sound for each
slide, so I did this.

1. Sketch out a story and the sequence of images. Note that the images
need to be ready in
advance and that those with text or stepped bullets should be made
and saved as separate files.

2. Draft a series of descriptions for each image. Record these as audio,
with a good space

between each one.

3. Edit the audio track - I used Audacity here - remove any pauses
and/or hesitations and finish with
a well spaced track. This is then recorded as a sequence of
separate audio files, one for each
slide. While doing this, note the time/length of audio for each
slide. Audio should be recorded
in .wav format. Best to leave a short silent period at the the
beginning of each file so that viewers

may look at a slide for a few seconds before the audio sarts

4. Now put the sequence together, assemble the slides with display times
longer than the timed
audio sequences. Then embed the relevant audio file for each
slide. Probably the start and

finish visual slides will not have audio.

5. Finally, run the whole program and perhaps adjust the transition
times for each slide. I usually

made the times a bit longer than needed, then pruned them at the end.

Awfully slow and only worth the effort, if the result is to be of
benefit to many.

Gordon.

Re: [libreoffice-users] need help off list on a Asus Win10/Ubuntu laptop

2017-08-14 Thread gordon cooper

Tim,

Not sure if this would help on Win 10, but maybe worth a
try. I gave up on new MS versions not long after XP, but still
work on a few multi-boot systems and run into Grub issues.

The cure used here is to set up and adjust partitions with
Gparted (on a CD) , then run Puppy Linux (also on a CD) to remake
Grub with the grub4dos utility. Has the advantage that the
resultant Grub menu is much more readable.

If the Windows partition size needs to be changed, then Defrag
is run before Gparted.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Unwanted Alternative Image Names (Resolved)

2017-07-25 Thread gordon cooper
Eureka!! Many Thanks Robert, that is the clue. The Alternative names
appeared
because a draft .odt file was created by a copy and paste from an html
file which
itself was a conversion from Lyx. The problem is hopefully a "once
only" but for the
archives and benefit of anyone who may meet this in the future, here is
a summary.

1. Any text appearing in Libre Office Image
Properties>Options>Alternative Name does
not appear on screen in a displayed .odt , but will be shown as a
screen shot, and in a
printed copy, as an image caption in an html export from that .odt
file.

2. Images inserted into a Libre Office .odt file will not usually create
an Alternative name,
but if the .odt file has been created by copy and paste from an
html source, the file
reference for any images in the html (not sure about tables) may be
saved as an

Alternative name to then appear in an html export.

This situation is unlikely to occur in normal Libre Office usage.

Thanks again Robert,

Gordon.

the selection is correct for html and xhtml. If you

We are using Libre Office in the writing of technical manuals
where some users make html copies.

Finding that the file names of images are being displayed
beside or below the images in the html versions. Because
all images are given a caption, we do not want the file names too.

I can remove them by going to each image Properties>Options
and deleting one at a time but this is time consuming when there are
many images - over 100 in one manual. Is there a setting that can
automatically prevent the file names being displayed?

Have looked through the Help but found nothing, did I overlook it?

Hi Steve,
Yes it is satisfactory, it is only the display of the
image file names that is
a relatively small nuisance. I can get rid of them by editing properties
for each

image, so asked to see if there was a setting that would remove them for the
whole file. Have also had to look at table properties to ensure that
framing lines
appeared in the html. HTML also has an advantage in that some software

formatting, even

if some of the phrasing and syntax needs correcting.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Unwanted Alternative Image Names

2017-07-27 Thread gordon cooper

Hi Regina,
I expect that you may have read the later postings
from myself

on this issue and have seen that I have worked around the problem. The
information appearing in the Alternative (Text only} line was there when
the Open Document files had been created by pasting from html but does
appear when we are inserting images straight into Libre Office.

Am interested in your information about filtering and XSLT, but having
never before worked with editing and conversions in XML, have spent
time today reading about them. You referred to possibly editing the
filter. I could not find your reference '/share/XSLT/
export/xhtml. Where do I start looking for this, in Libre Office, or where?

Am not familiar with LO 6.0., presently working in 5.2.6.2 which is the
version currently available from the repositories for MX-Linux, the OS
that is described in the Manual currently being edited and displaying
of our Alternative Name problem.

I will attend to the bug report.

My thanks for your advice,
Kind regards,
Gordon

I guess you are using File > Export > XHTML. At least with that, I can
reproduce the problem.

It looks like an error in the XHTML filter. Using an old version of
the filter, I see both the caption text and the alternative text of
the picture. Using a new version of the filter (here developer version
LO 6.0), I see only the alternative text of the picture and no caption
text at all.

Please write a bug report for the problem.

It is possible to fix the bug without compiling the LO sources. You
can edit the filter directly. You find the filter in folder>/share/XSLT/export/xhtml. The part body.xsl is relevant here.
Do you know someone with knowledge in XSLT?

Kind regards
Regina

In the folder, where LibreOffice is installed.

In my linux, it is here :

/usr/lib/libreoffice/share/xslt/export/

otherwise try, in a terminal, 'which libreoffice' (without the quotes)
and track it down from there.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Re: Unwanted Alternative Image Names

2017-07-27 Thread gordon cooper

I was not aware of this facet but now having read through
your references, I fully understand. Thank you.

However, the Alternative text should not appear if the image
already has the Name used as the caption. In our case, Alt.
does not appear on the Libre Office original but shows up on
an html export. This has been reported as a bug. Meantime
I am deleting anything on the Alternative text line as this may
cause confusion, particularly in translated copies.

Gordon.

Believe the default filters (import and export) are configured to facilitate

displayed in the Navigator GUI--unnamed images/objects are not shown by
default.

HI,

You are right. The fields for user-defined layouts seem to adjust

only way I was able to create something that looks like what you are
looking for is to:

1) Create an empty document.
2) Adjust the page margins to match the cutout locations of your Avery
label sheet (Format -> Page -> Page).
3) Insert a 1 row/4 column table that has no headers and no borders; if
your margins are correctly set, the table should now occupy the full
usable width of the page and each cell should be of the correct width.
4) Adjust the height of your row by right-clicking in a cell and
selecting "Size" -> Row Height. Set it to 0.67 inch.
5) Once this is done, go to the rightmost cell and insert a new row by
hitting TAB (the new row will be of the same height as the first one).
Do this until you have the correct number of rows on your page.

You may need to play with the Spacing to Content (Table -> Properties
-> Borders) of the cells to position the text inside the cells so it
stays clear of the cutout lines.

Not fantasticly user friendly but it should do the job.

I hope this helps.

[libreoffice-users] Missing Images in LO

2017-06-01 Thread gordon cooper

This issue has just appeared. For about 12 months, one of my
regular tasks in LO has been to paste html technical documents
into Libre Office, where images are scaled, text edited
and formatted before exporting to pdf, or on-forwarding to
our translation team.

This week, images from the html files are missing from the
Libre Office paste, but they re-appear in the pdf files. Instead
of images, LO is displaying empty frames with a line of text
showing the image file name. A right click on an image frame
brings up a menu with access to Properties. Select the image
Tab in Properties and the correct image is displayed, I can not
get it display in the LO document.

I can resize the empty image frames in LO so that the final
pdfs are correct. The lack of LO images is preventing the
forwarding of files for translation.

Operating System:  MX-Linux Version 16;

Libre Office: Version: 5.2.2.2.0+
  Build ID: 1:5.2.2~rc2-2~bpo8+1

Have tried all the apparent options without success.

Thanks,
Gordon Cooper

Re: [libreoffice-users] Heading 1 missing in Navigator

2017-09-15 Thread gordon cooper

Hi Regina,
Vielen danke, the Tools>Outline-numbering has solved
part of

the heading/TOC problem.

I wonder if you can help with the second part.  If I simply copy and
paste the .odt section files to assemble the final document,
making a TOC is easy.  But, If I try to make an .odm master, following
the instructions in LO Help, a master is created with correct formatting
etc.,

but it is all read-only and will not allow access to make a TOC.

Have tried changing the Edit Mode using Ctrl+Shift+M but this closes the
file,

and on re-opening it, any attempt to edit brings a pop-up saying that access
is denied.

A comment.  This is my first serious attempt to build a User Manual in LO,
we have been working  in Lyx previously. Find this to be a bit like learning
another language.

Regards,
Gordon

P.S. Remy, have just received your suggestions. Many thanks

by the Navigator and therefore does not appear in a TOC.  If the style
is changed
to Heading 2 , the Navigator  sees it and the TOC shows the title Have
tried deleting
the title and retyping it and setting style to Heading 1 but no
improvement.

The Navigator show paragraphs which are "true" headings and that does
not depend on the name of the style. Instead go to Tools > Outline
numbering and make sure that for "Level 1" the style "Heading 1" is
selected.

Files that have been written with LO 5.2  do show Heading 1 in the
navigator, but those
made with 5.3  do not. I could not see anything in the 5.3 release notes
that could
cause this problem.  Am I missing something?

If you ever have tried to use a bullet for that level [which is not
possible] such error might appear.

Kind regards
Regina

[libreoffice-users] Applying paragraph style to document

Hi all,  Thought I could do this in LO but cannot find the detail.  Want
to set paragraph

spacings for a big file without having to do each paragraph separately.

Hi Jean-Baptiste,

All fixed thank you. It was the manual formatting causing
the problem. Had been

experimenting on a couple of paragraphs to find a suitable style.

Kind regards,

Remove manual formatting (ctrl+A ctrl+M)
modify applied paragraph styles; probably Default and Text Body may be
enough.

Best regards.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Write Protection Locked

2017-09-10 Thread gordon cooper

HI Robert,
Thank you for that advice. Will work with it
tomorrow.  This is first time

I have had a master to edit. It was assembled by another member of our group
who sent it to me for proof read and any corrections. The first thing
needing repair
is the index - which does not access the linked documents.  As  I am
very much
a beginner with LO's master and linked docs, (previously we used Lyx for
our OS

documentation) this may be a slow process.

Regards,

Gordon.

Could the document be write-protected by the system, not by LO?

If protection of LO is disabled you could only chang text in the master,
not in the linked documents. The linked documents must be opened by
doubleclick on the document-name in the navigator of the masterdocument.

Re: [libreoffice-users] How many of you deal with the Linux Users Group [Facebook]?

2018-04-30 Thread gordon cooper

To make a PDF from LO.

File>Export>Export as PDF.

And in the bad/good old days when I used an MS operating system and was
proof reading scripts that came as PDF's, I used one of Nuance's programs
to edit and annotate the proofs

Incidentally, I have been using LInux and LO for years and regularly
needed to
use MS Word in replies to the members of a craft group I  have been
assisting.

No problems even though LO chides me for using an MS format and warns about
errors.

Like Tom, I've always thought of PDF as a generally non-editable format,
although I have used fillable PDF forms before. I've just never known
how to create a fillable PDF. Can it be done from within LO?

Virgil

My understanding is that it's a feature pretty much only covered by
Adobe software. That includes filling out a form.

Things may have changed since I last checked.

That was my thinking as well, which is why I'm intrigued by the
possibility of doing it directly within LO.

Re: [libreoffice-users] About pseudo objects with Basic code ...

We were allowed the occasional GoTo, but only if it was a
forward jump, never backwards.

IF...THEN   and ELSE DO  were much to be preferred.

I have tinkered with Python and would prefer it to Basic
but have little need for any programming these days.

My Pascal instructor was of the mind that the only two control
structures needed were:
* GoTo;
* Repeat Until;

That makes for some very messy code.

GoTo. One of the curses of Basic, the GoTo.

When used by newcomers (and a few some old hands too) a
Basic program would  soon become an unstructured mess of
GoTo's and a hassle to debug.  One of our Pascal lecturers was
very  anti-Basic and forbade us to use it,  or to even talk about it
in his presence.

Thank you Tom and Jonathon for the memory,

There is a book from the early/mid eighties, that is simply lists the
vocabulary of the various dialects of BASIC in use then. IIRC, it was
called _The BASIC Book_. It was written specifically for programmers to
port software between the various systems that were available.

Back then, all variants of basic used line numbers, and allowed GoTo.
Today, several variants of BASIC don't use line number, and some
variants don't have GoTo.

We got around this by using the 'Replace' function instead of Paste.

If so it is not difficult to resize and add white space to all images
in a directory so they are all the same proportions. I.e. the portrait
mode images are scaled to the height of the landscape images and
padded to the width of the landscape images.

Unfortunately, when I try to save this in either .DOC or .DOCX format,
the "Chapter #" piece is outdented so the actual title starts at the
left margin, which is not an acceptable format for publishers or even
editors to read/publish. It also looks really screwy.

When I went in to edit the style, there is nowhere I can see/find such

How do I do that?

I tried looking in LO Help, but I'm not even sure how to query for

Any suggestions that work would be most welcome.
