I have a suggestion! Do like me and get a ledger book and write down
yourpasswords for each service and use different passwords for each
service. After all if people can hack computers then they no doubt can crack the
so called password vault. If people like Microsoft are providing it
theyprobably have a way to strip all of your passwords and monitor yourevery
move. If someone takes over your computer and you have tohave it wiped then you
still can access the services from your ledger.hopefully you backed up your
files. Larry Phillips

Extremely unlikely.
The problem is that I can't open the files on my laptop. When I reload

"Can't open" is a vague description. How are you trying to "open" files
- double click, File | Open withing OpenOffice, dragging file(s) onto
OpenOffice? What results when you try to open a file; is there an error
message, nothing happens, something else?

What is your operating system?

The request for "registration"arises because your OpenOffice installation's
User Profile has been damaged, perhaps because of overhasty close down of the
computer, before the updated profile of the last editing session has been
written to disk. This can also happen if there is a program or computer crash.
By not registering again using your old login name OpenOffice was unable to
recover your installation details, including the last edited files. However
these files are still on the computer, still in the folder in which they were
Saved. As you use /File /Open within OpenOffice, and navigate to that
folder(s), selecting each file to edit it, it will once more appear in Recent
Documents. If you edit the Default paragraph style and change the language
selection on its Font tab to your desired language, this should change all
styles to use that language and remover he spellcheck highlighting.

Multiple Problems

2023-01-30 Thread Josephine Pizzino
I've been using Open Office for over 10 years. Yesterday, however, it
opened to a window asking me to register. I didn't want to complicate
things by starting a new account, I clicked on the second option (don't
remember what it said) and it opened Office but without any of my Recent
Files, and all the settings for my display had changed. Worse, when I did
open a file, it seemed EVERY WORD was highlighted.

Then, after working for over 2 hours on a document, which I saved
periodically, the program froze and I wasn't able to do anything except
turn off my computer and restart. Fortunately, most of the changes in that
document were still there, but I have had problems with Open Office
freezing, although it usually is only that program, and not my entire
computer.

So, it seems most of these problems occured because I was asked to register
after all these years. It's also very frustrating to have to hunt and peck
to reset the way my tools are displayed, and to not have Recent Documents
available. Finally, it's impossible to read through the document when
everything is highlighted. Previously, the spell check was essentially
useless, so I would copy the text elsewhere to check for errors. Now it's
on hyperdrive!

I hope you can help me. Below is a screenshot of how that document looks.
This is a time sensitive issue, so I hope you can help me resolve it
promptly.

Thank you,

Re: Problems

2022-01-27 Thread Alan B
Ron,
Strongly recommend do not include your phone number or personal information
beyond your email address. This is a public mailing list and whatever you
post here can be read by anyone.

As to the crashing there are many many potential causes and they differ
depending on such things as the particular software being used and the
configuration of the computer. If an old version of Windows and a new
version of OpenOffice or vice versa that could be the problem. A recent
Windows update could even be the source of the problem.

In no particular order here are some potential solutions if your computer
is using Windows 10. I suggest try each one, see if the problem persists
and if so move on to the next one.
* Make sure ALL Windows updates have been applied
* Make sure you're using the latest version of OpenOffice
* Uninstall OpenOffice then reinstall it
* Check space available on the hard drive, Windows seems to like 20% of the
hard drive free (regardless of the drive's size). If there's not 20% free
see if you can remove files and/or uninstall programs you don't use to get
to 20% free
* Use your antivirus and antimalware software and do full scans of the hard
drive to see if any threats are found and if they are let the antivirus and
antimalware programs fix them
* Check CPU and Memory usage in the Performance tab in Task Manager. If
either of them are pegged see what program(s) are causing it and shut them
down or uninstall ones you don't need.

Every time you input the first Chinese character, the first character
cannot be found, and the first character must be re-entered;

In addition; if you want to enter a Chinese sentence with
numbers/punctuation/symbols, it will jump to the front of the Chinese
characters. If you want to complete this sentence, you must press enter and
then press F2 again to enter the sentence and then continue to input
unfinished numbers/  Punctuation/symbols;

But this action cannot last for a long time; it will shut down the machine;
hold a screen; force you to close the window, that is, if you do not save
in the middle of the input; that is, all the effort is wasted, and you will
have to go out to revert. After repairing and restoring for a period of
time to retrieve it, if the file is opened and reused; the time will get
shorter and shorter, and you will need to turn off the repair and restore
and reopen it. It will not be used at all!

I have deleted the openoffice software in my computer; reinstalled it
again, it is already updated to the latest version; but none of the above
problems can be solved!

Please pay attention and solve this problem as soon as possible

and its a common problem in this program.
but i believe that you should report the bug for openoffice developers.

i reported the bug to libreoffice developers.

and openning all of my files using libreoffice without crashing became possible.
when you made account and reported the bug, dont forget to attach your

Problems With Apache Open Office Writer

2020-10-04 Thread Sid Myers
Dear Sirs:
I was working with Apache Open Office Writer. Here's what I did. I was
gathering some notes on a subject that involved attempting to copy an image
to the document.
I copied the image (an image of a plat of land on a map of DeSoto Parish in
Louisiana). Immediately upon doing so a blue circle began to spin as if it
working to download the image which is normal. However, it was taking a lot
of time so I had some other things to do and when I returned to my computer
there were pages and pages of letters ... and numbers .. lots of them. When
I attempted to delete them Open Office Writer froze up. I restarted my
computer several times. Of course, each time document did recover (going
thru the recover process) .. BUT .. it did it over and over again.
So, I not very tech-savvy but somehow I corrupted the software I guess. ..
What do I do now?
Plus, I thought about uninstalling Open Office.. but then I thought .. hmmm
I might lose all of my other Open Office Writers files.
So, I did not want to do anything before contacting you first.
Please tell me what to do.

Respectfully,
Sid Myers ..

There could be many setting which differ from the settings at your
friends PC e.g. memory settings

or security settings.

She had done some tests to see if it was totaling.

Did your friend tested it on your or here system?

Made sure it was saved. When I started using her total rows were not there.

When you open the spreadsheet, can you see the rows that should total?

Because it closes at random during entering we learned to save often.
Try to enter data with the AutoCalculate option switched off from the
Tools - Cell Contents

But it doesn’t seem to be doing that. Jean

Because OpenOffice/Computer terminated, there may be portions of the OpenOffice
program left running. Start TaskManager (Ctrl Shift Esc) and kill any
"soffice" processes shown on T<'s tabs. Note spelling "soffice", with an
initial "s". Then try to start OpenOffice again.

You won't lose "All" the documents you have - they will be on your computer in
the locations in which they were originally Saved. They may not appear in OO's
/File /Recent Documents, but as you open each one, it will reappear in that
list. The major concern is for your document(s) open at the time of computer
or program shutdown. These can be damaged; it is often possible to recover
these by the methods outlined in
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=71=85038

This gives detailed instructions on how to

a) use Previous Versions (W7 and later) to recover previous versions of the
file.

b) recover your file as it was when you last opened or saved it, or as it was
when it was last saved with AutoRecovery;

c) find previous versions of the file in the folder it is located in, but which
have since been deleted;

d) un-delete the temporary files AOO wrote while you were editing the file, and
then deleted.  This may recover your file as it was when you last opened or you
last saved it.

2020-07-07 Thread CHRIS SAVILLE
Hi

I have been using open office for about 10 years without a problem until now. I
am currently working on version 4.2

Yesterday I wrote a document and my screen automatically back to the desktop.
When I opened open office again it offered me the chance to recover (as it has
done before) which I did, but it just recovered a blank page.

I clicked on “File” to access other documents but it kept on returning the same
message “open office not responding”

I’ve tried again this morning but same thing has happened, more than once .

I tried then to load version 4.7, but it tells me to shutdown quickstart
first.

I don’t won’t to loose all the documents that I have.

Can you please advise.

Regards

Chris Saville

It may be that the cells not included are formatted as text rather than
numbers. Use Ctrl+F8 - or View | Value Highlighting - to display the
cell contents in different colors, depending on type. Text cells are
formatted in black, formulas in green, and number cells in blue, no
matter how their display is formatted.

SUM ignores cells formatted as text.

Granted that in 2020 it feels odd to still be buying DVD's with the
software on it but there is still a legitimate market for it.

I agree that there is the possibility to get things you don't want with it
but there are also folks playing it straight.

They add value by including extras, one vendor in particular has issued a
new DVD yearly, they include a custom windows installer, all the language
packs, lots of free fonts, bunches of added templates and manuals. The DVD
includes Windows and Mac binaries. They are clear in their marketing
material that support, for everything other then the installer, comes from
the AOO community.

They also charge are very reasonable price of around 10 USD or 8 Euro.

I would be wary of getting it on a CD these days. There are more than a
few vendors that will sell you a CD with Open Office on it. However, the
CD may have other little nasties on it as well most of which you do not
want. If you have to pay for the software beware.

Re: Installation Problems.

2020-02-24 Thread Drew Jensen
There is a long history of OpenOffice.org being offered on CD and DVD.

This was at times with the blessings of the old owners of the Intellectual
Property rights to the URL, Sun Microsystems, and numerous individual
boosters, and some commercial operations.

The practice went on after the IP was sold to Oracle and then granted to
Apache Software Foundation with regards to boosters and commercial
operations right down to today.

You may want to nudge folks to only using the download from the
openoffice.org URL, that Apache OpenOffice continues to use, but no one
should act surprised that some folks will have acquired it via CD or DVD.

Best wishes,

Drew

You can download an reinstall OO 3.2; it should then be capable of being
uninstalled.

Or, you could download a utility such as CCleaner and tell it to remove
OpenOffice 3.2; OO 4.1.7 should then install.

It would be useful if you had given us the exact wording of the message, but at
a guess, this message might be that it needs the OpenOffice 3.2 disk to
uninstall the existing version of OpenOffice.

You could download the version 3.2, make a DVD of it and follow the prompting
before installing OpenOffice 4.1.7 (latest).

Or, download a utility such as CCleaner and tell it to remove OO 3.2, reboot
computer, then install OO 4.1.7.

Did you download the file from OpenOffice.org?  I don’t know of any version of
OO that uses a CD disk.

Latest version is 4.1.7 ( https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html)

If you paid for the version (very obsolete) that you are trying to install, you
got ripped off.  Open Office is free.

2019-08-05 Thread Steven Ahlers
This is an issue with the Gatekeeper to prevent malware installation.
OpenOffice downloaded from
https://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html
Is safe. Please read the instructions at the above address or look at the
information at Apple Help on Gatekeeper.

The simplest and safest way to get around the Gatekeeper has been to Right
Click (Control Click) on the OpenOffice icon and follow the instructions to
allow the program to run.

If you have any further questions please address them to the users list address:

If you had read the release notes at
https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/OOOUSERS/AOO+4.1.6+Release+Notes#AOO4.1.6ReleaseNotes-FormacOSusers
you would have seen this:

 For macOS users

 * Apache OpenOffice 4.1.6 will be flagged by the Gatekeeper facility in
macOS. This is a
feature to help guard against malware on macOS systems.
o For OS X up to 10.11 "El Capitan": There is a procedure laid out at
the following
link to allow applications not installed from the Mac App store to
run. See theMac
   support article .
 o For macOS 10.12 "Sierra" (/and newer)/: In Finder, Control-click or
right click the
icon of the app. Select Open from the top of contextual menu that
appears. Click
Open in the dialog box. If prompted, enter an administrator name and
password. This
is needed just the first time you launch Apache OpenOffice.

There was a previous OO forum which has not been in existence for some years -

Have you tried using File | Open to open the Excel files? If this works,
it may be that you need to add the appropriate file associations to

The Google Pixelbook runs the Chrome operating system. Apache Open
Office is not designed to run on Chrome; in fact, it won't. This is why
you are having problems. It is possible that what you need is

This list is manned by volunteers in their own time; there is no telephone
support.

If you are using Windows 10 and the problem has started about six weeks ago, it
is most probably caused by a Windows 10 upgrade in mid August.

This is probably caused by a Windows 10 upgrade. See this post for details, and
the link from it to to prevent that upgrade reinstalling
https://forum.openoffice.org/en/forum/viewtopic.php?f=15=95023=453212

I do not use Windows, so cannot help further with this, but reports on the
Forum are that it works for most recent problems with Calc instability..

I have checked the forums and tried the different "fixes" they claim to have

all the work since the previous save. This happens multiple times a day, and
if I don't get to talk to someone, I am going to look at switching companies

OpenJDK 11? I don't think AOO 4.1.5 can see that version.
See: https://www.openoffice.org/download/common/java.html

I am running AOO 4.1.5 with OpenJDK 1.8.0_171 on Ubuntu 18.04.
You should be able to install it from the Ubuntu repository.

FIRST dumb question: is the limitation correct that OO cannot use a 64bit
JRE?
That depends; the Windows version of AOO is 32 bit only so requires a 32
bit Java. AOO is available in both 32 and 64 bit versions for Linux, so
you will need the appropriate Java to match the bitness of the AOO you
downloaded.

SECOND dumb question: is there another way to solve this hangup.

P.S. I did try to install the 32-bit JRE and probably screwed the pooch --
today I cannot launch OO at all "application cannot be started.

did you try libreoffice?
because it supports more range of formats.

In any of the sub forums, to the top left is a button with red print saying

Open Office forum and other problems

2017-11-30 Thread colin billowes
Just been trying to post a question on open office forum and see that you
make it as difficult as possible. Why don't you have a great big box
saying "POST"?

Every time I use Apache and save documents, the next time I try to save, it
tells me that it has not saved the last ones and do I want to save them.
How do I fix this stupidity?

I truly despair at the illogicality of almost all software - can't anyone
in your business compose lucid, logical and unambiguous English which gives
foolproof instructions?

Re: Problems with Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.4_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US

We only sign the .tar.gz archive and signatures are in the .asc file
corresponding to the archive you downloaded. So in your case the
signature could be verified this way:
1. Download
http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.1.4/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.4_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz.asc

2. Run gpg --verify
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.4_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz.asc

When I try that, I get:
gpg: Signature made Thu 12 Oct 2017 11:18:37 AM EDT using RSA key ID
791485A8
gpg: Can't check signature: No public key

OK. This is expected if you didn't import the keys. For it to succeed,
download to the same directory:
1.
http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.1.4/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.4_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz.asc
2.
http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/4.1.4/binaries/en-US/Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.4_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz

3. http://archive.apache.org/dist/openoffice/KEYS

Then run:
$ gpg --import KEYS
$ gpg --verify
Apache_OpenOffice_4.1.4_Linux_x86-64_install-rpm_en-US.tar.gz.asc

This will tell you that the .tar.gz file has a valid signature by Jim,
Release Manager for 4.1.4. It might still complain that it can't verify
that the key belongs to the reported owner, but you will have to trust
the KEYS file for this.

This won't solve your problem with YaST at all, since this applies to
the archive as a whole, not to the contents.

What command do you use for installation? RPM directly, something like
"rpm -Uvh *.rpm"? Or some interface to it? There is probably some
setting that you should disable in order for it to trust "unsigned"
packages (again, ours ARE signed; just, we sign the archive but not
the individual packages).

I use the Yast software software management utility. I create a
repository by copying the contents of the downloaded file to a directory
and then tell the Yast software management to update. I've been using
this method for years and it's never failed before.

I don't think this depends on how we packaged 4.1.4. I would be
surprised if you get something different with 4.1.3, or any earlier
release. Is it possible that some upgrade enforced YaST to reject
unsigned packages?

I see the same error being reported here:
https://github.com/atom/atom/issues/15418 for another project, and being
tracked down to a YaST/OS issue. In that case they could solve it by
signing the package, but in our case we already sign the .tar.gz, just
YaST likely cannot see or handle it. So you will have to disable some
YaST settings to get it to behave as it did in earlier times.

Regards,
  Andrea.
