I don't think there is anything wrong with your settings of Firefox.
Firefox renders HTML and XHTML closer to the W3C standards than IE does.

While I think the whole community would like to see you complete step 4 it
is not neseccary to remove MS Office Immediately.
OpenOffice and MS Office can reside on the same machine.
If they're both on the same machine you may not want OO to load (open) MS
format files by default.
