Perhaps I misunderstand, but you seem to want a floating entity
containg some text, and within that entity, you want a formula
object. AFAICS the only way to achieve that is within Writer - make a
/frame/ (Insert | Frame) and put your text within it, and you'll find
you can also - within that frame - do an Insert | Object | Formula.
The inserted formula is then truly within the frame, and can be
anchored or wrapped as any other object. (You can also flow text
 between such frames, btw.)

A text /box/ is a different sort of beast but available within Draw
and Writer. As you remark, Insert|Object doesn't work in Writer while
the cursor is within a text box. If you use it in Draw to attempt to
insert something in a text box, you get an independent object, not
attached to the text box at all. I suspect this isn't what you want.

Incidentally, it does seem possible to group (in Draw) a formula
object with other things. Try putting a formula and a graphic onto
the page, then use the cursor to drag a large selection box round
both, for example. Both will be selected, and can be, for example,
grouped together or aligned. (This won't work in Writer, however.)

Hope this helps. If not, perhaps you could clarify what you're trying
to achieve on the page - there may be a totally different approach.

Maybe you just wnat to have numbered formulas?
In the case try the auto-text 'fn'. (Enter fn and press F3)

Now it is clear to me that I have been using the Writer Draw Functions
incorrectly. It is much more simple to draw objects inside a frame (Insert
Frame). As suggested to me, I can write the text, edit the formula, and draw
the lines. No need to group, they stick together inside the frame, which
apparently can be edited, moved, anchored, etc., without modifying its
contents. I can even take off the borders of the frame.
 The suggestions were very helpful.

I personally feel that the formula object is not very flexible. In writer I
can't even group it to a text box and I found that there is a lot of other
things that seems to be impossible too. Maybe we should collect all the
things we want and make a wish list to report as a wish for enhancements. Or
maybe OpenOffice.org 3.0 does this far better, making a wish list
unnecessary?

In my experience Requests For Enhancements should not be grouped
together. One RFE per feature request allows it to be folloed to
conclusion separately.

One should check it has not been asked for before adding a RFE. Then
bring the number of the RFE back to this list if you want others to vote
for it. Straw polls on the mailing list are not relevant to developers.

What version of OpenOffice are you running on what operating system. How

???

Now I was confused when I replied - I'm always muddling text /boxes/
and text /frames/ -- and I now see the OP explicitly said /frame/
(and implied Draw for that matter - I really must remember to read
well before replying :-) ). If he meant /frame/, he must have been
using Writer (using Insert|Frame) - afaik Draw doesn't allow text
frames(*). And in this case a formula object appears to be insertable
into a text /frame/ in the obvious way and behaves as part of the
frame.

If he meant text /box/ (ie the thing you get by clicking the T in the
drawing tools bar), then my comment stands - with cursor inside the
text box, in Writer, the Insert|Object menu entries are greyed out,
while in Draw they're available -- but an inserted formula has its
own existance separate from the text box. I can't see why your
mileage should be so different :-(

Perhaps the OP could clarify what he wants to achieve? Is this in
Draw or Writer, and was it a text frame or a text box?

(*) If I'm wrong here, please enlighten me!

It is not clear to me what you mean by inserting the formula from the
draw functions, but if it means placing a formula into a text frame,
and possibly copy/pasting into a drawing then it is easily done:

Create a frame in a text document.
  Select the frame
Insert the formula using the formula editor
  Copy the frame
  Paste into the drawing.

But that's not actually in the text box. Which will matter when the

And in Writer? Maybe I'm confused, but I'm almost sure someone said
they could do this in both.

But I really think the OP needs to clarify exactly what he did and
what he wants to achieve. As I said, he talks about drawing tools
and text /frames/ (not boxes). Which kind of implies he's using
writer and writer's tools.

Hi,

I need to put a math formula (e.g. widevec{?}) into a text frame from
the draw functions.
Is there a way to do it in the current version of OOo?
Thanks!

Yes. When in the text box, click on Insert Object Formula. This
will open the math editor, where you can create the desired formula.

It doesn't work. When I am in a text frame from the draw functions,
the menu insert object formula and all other options are
disabled. I can't use either copy and paste.
