The real problem here is that this student was not exposed to the Metric System in fourth grade, or fifth grade or sixth grade or basically not any time in any significant way until she got to nursing school. There the emphasis was on conversion. Of course she is confused.
I have to wonder with all this discussion of US Nobel awards, how many of those scientists were actually educated in the US. Seems to me we picked up a lot of scientists after World War II who came here and later won Nobel prises, so they would have been educated in Europe in the Metric
