Could it be that you have more than one version of OS
installed? Try a recover disk with a known system on
it and see if your Mac functions properly. I have
forgotten how to override the internal disk with a
floppy (that contains a system on it) but maybe
someone on this list can provide that
To my experience, the video adapters won't work at all with the older
LC series. You need a genuine Apple RGB monitor.
