Could it be that you have more than one version of OS installed? Try a recover disk with a known system on it and see if your Mac functions properly. I have forgotten how to override the internal disk with a floppy (that contains a system on it) but maybe someone on this list can provide that answer should overriding your system file on your internal hard drive be the solution to your problem. Of course if you should boot successfully, you should search for any files that have the name 'system,' whether or not having more than one system is the problem. The fix for having more than one OS installed in the same startup drive is to change the name of one of them - E.G. by adding a letter or number to the System file. That technique works with a Mac IIci and should also work on your Mac.
