I suppose your VPN (Nortel something) is done by a hardware firewall or some
hardware, right? If that's the case, you'd better talk to your admin to see how he
configures the device. By default, every port is closed across zones (outside,
inside, DMZ and VPN).

I told the ssh server to listen on another port than 22. I chose the https port, and

Yeah, I contacted my ISP and searched a few webpages. What I found out
was that my SS5200 was set to bridge mode, and that would make it hard
to reach my computer. I updated the firmware, setting it to router, and
enabling a port forwarding for VNC's ports, and now everything works.
