TCF,
The connection closed unexpectedly means that the server closed the
connection when the viewer wasn't expecting it to - why that happened will
normally be logged at the server.

OK, I now have some error messages to dissect:
Firstly, it logs that I've tried to access the PC, saying
Connections: accepted: (IP address)
Then, three seconds later (after I've entered the password), it then
rejects me and spits out the following code:
Are you absolutely, positively sure that no one is using Remote Desktop
(RDP) or Fast User Switching (FUS)?
Also, are you sure the server is running as Local System Account
(Properties-Log On for the service)?
I am assuming when this happens that there is no one there do do remote
diagnostics,
Are you absolutely, positively sure that no one is using Remote
Desktop (RDP) or Fast User Switching (FUS)?
Yes, positive. Not only is each PC in a lockable cabinet (or similar
space), but there are no monitors or keyboards/mouse on site. Therefore
it's impossible for anyone to use them locally
: The connection closed unexpectedly
Well, that is strange then. I assume you are running it as a service,
and not in User mode, right?
You should also check the Event Viewer to see if it is logging anything
of interest when it fails.
Once you receive the error, are you still able to enter
I don't think it's a timing issue, as 90% of the time I can log in
within 20-30 seconds of a reboot.
In fact, If I try to VNC into the PC at the same time that its
re-booting, it will wait patiently until the connection appears, and
then allow a log in.
Ben
Could this be a timing issue?
Ben,
Are you using Fast User Switching or Remote Desktop on the problem computer?
That could cause the error that you're seeing, which would go away when you
reboot.

Ben,
One other thing - is the computer in question configured for power-saving
(standby mode, monitor power-off, etc)?

No, I'm not using either of these things at all. All of my computers are

Ben napisal(a):
I am the only User for these remote PCs, and this situation only
happens after I have been logged on (in VNC) and re-booted the PC.
I normally wait a couple of minutes for the PC to completely restart
before logging back in through VNC again, and although the usual
passowrd
couldn't handle the load and dropped the signal.

Joe,
It would have been helpful to know what error messages VNC Server was
logging before you re-installed it. The install process doesn't modify the
VNC Server settings in any way, so

Unfortunately, VNC stops working as soon as they use it.

No, that shouldn't cause any problem, then.
As long as User's logoff, and not switch, all should work just
this condition in the last few
days).

Yes, running it as a service at both ends.
Once you receive the error, are you still able to enter a
password each time, or does it stop accepting connections altogether?
I can continue to
All I can suggest at this point is looking to see if any errors are in
the Event Viewer that may offer clues,
and make sure you are running the latest version (4.1.1)...
Ben wrote:

Yes,
Two things:
1) I don't know if maybe it's a permissions issue where VNC can't access the
font server.
2) *IS* the font server running on the Solaris box?
I'm afraid I don't know much about Solaris, so I can't say for sure, but I
think it is similar enough to linux that it's using something
_FontTransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 146
failed to set default font path 'tcp/localhost:7100'
Fatal server error:
Have you definitely got a font server running on port 7100? Try taking
this off, unless you *need* it.
/usr/openwin/bin/xrdb: No such file or directory
Glen,
Can you upgrade to VNC 4.1.1 and check whether that exhibits the same
behaviour?
