OK, you're right, it's a combo: fake fontspec errors in XeLaTeX and the
breakdown of go-to functions in TeXWorks, are they related? I don't
know. I cannot discern which one is to be blamed, for I typeset stuff in
XeTeX through TeXWorks, I don't know how to use raw XeTeX nor do I use
I used to... but moved to Mac so don't anymore. I can't remember the
nature of the difficulties, though, it's been a while.

place? I just don't understand why! Slanted shapes are a last-resort
stuff, not first-choice. So why loading a slanted shape when the italic

Slanted =/= crappy. You have have optically adjusted obliques for sans
serif typefaces. You can even have slanted serif fonts.

I don't use Ubuntu, but if you have both TL2010 and 2011, I'd check
the directories that are in fontconfig (or run fc-cache -v and see
which directories it's looking in). It may be that fontspec is
complaining because it finds duplicate sets of fonts between the two
