I have just installed Linux RedHat 9.0 on an emachines M5105 notebook (set
up as a dual boot machine with the already installed Windows XP). The
machine has a 15.4 widescreen display with 1280x800 resolution. The
problem is that RH9 does not recognise the widescreen, i.e. everything is
stretched.

(the few modifications I already tried made no difference.) Or, in the
worst case, is there a way in which I can get the normal aspect ratio of
4/3 (e.g. 1024x768) by including black stripes at the sides? The graphics

If the video mode 1280x800 is not listed you have no hope
to exploit your wide screen.
If there is no such mode listed in the default modes, why
not just roll your own. E.g.
gtf 1280 800 75
returns:
# 1280x800 @ 75.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 62.62

If you have got XFree86 4.3 or better try configuring it as root
with XFree86 -configure
It should write XF86Config.new to ./home. Check the file under
something like emacs for correct hardware reconition before
using it.
You dont need modes for the thing to work.

But my 1280x800 display works fine under Windows (i.e. not stretched) so
the video card must support this (widescreen) mode. I guess the problem
is that the Linux driver is not providing support for this mode (or
rather, it doesn't obviously support this mode - maybe
