FWIW, this is Debian testing, SIS513, XF86 4.2.1.1, with the sis driver
and no fbcon.

will have :1. I can start this by hand (by running X :1 -query
remotehost) after starting xdm, but I'd like xdm to kick up the second

Thanks for the info though - I'll probably set that up at home.

Thanks!

: succeeded
It looks like fontconfig 2.2.0 and changing the font path order actually
did the trick for most apps - mozilla seems to be particularly
insistent, and I'll have to track down how to change that.
(I also do have a build with --disable-xft --disable-freetype and it
works as well)

IIRC, there are some PCI options you can pass XFree86 that tell it to be
nicer to the PCI bus. Of course, it probably costs performance.

is just too critical to jack.
Now, a specially designed network with ADAT synchronization could work,
but I doubt anyone would want to port X11 to such a transport... ::-)

Perhaps they fixed it in the Matrox driver for G400 but not G450?
At any rate use the XFree drivers if at all possible.

for hardware that I don't have on hand. For example, a friend once
needed a CVS version of XFree86 but had never built it. I was able to
crank out a config for him and he could then build pretty painlessly.
