The XF86Config file that got generated was probably for version 3 of X
and you're running version 4 from startx...or something like that. I'm
not clear on how rh7.3 chooses between them. Redhat puts the X config
at the end of the setup though, so the rest of your install is probably
ok - you

I've stared at the radeon manual page from 4.2.99.902 for quite a while
now and tried a few things, but I don't think I'm getting the config
quite right to tell X that I want to use both ports of my dvi/vga
radeon7500 in xinerama mode. Anyone have a working config file you
could share?

As Cynthia said, the X install worked - it overwrites the xinitrc that
redhat supplies. That file is the one that starts Gnome or KDE.
Instead, you're now getting twm, an old window manager.
Personally I'm working on a redhat 7.3 system, so my re-integrated
script may not work for you on 8.0
Well, my replying to you definitely qualifies as the blind leading the
blind, but perhaps you should use the radeon driver for your radeon7500
as well. I'm currently typing this message on an X display powered by a
radeon7500 (64MB, PCI) using the radeon driver on X4.2.99.902 (aka 4.3.0
rc2).
planning to move to 4.3.0 (currently on rc2) in a few moments, just as
soon as I muster the courage. :-(

with similar symptoms. I've even explicitely set the hsync and vsync -
ie I put in only one value for each, not a range - and it doesn't seem
