[XFree86] XFree86 Without Root

2014-05-02 Thread Peter John Burkimsher
Hi XFree86 list,

tl;dr - Please can someone give me advice on running XFree86 as an unprivileged
(non-root) user?

OpenShift (http://www.openshift.com) is a service from Red Hat that gives you a
completely free server with SSH and SFTP access. Unlike Amazon's free for 12
months model, this is free forever, and I've used it flawlessly since 2011.
It's also not blocked in China. I can run command-line tools, Bash scripts,
PHP, Python, Ruby, Java, you name it.

The problem with OpenShift is that I don't have root access to the virtual
machine. So everything has to happen through my user folder. I can export my
path, but I basically have to compile each program I want from source.

X11VNC is an X server and a VNC server in one. I've successfully compiled it,
set up port forwarding, and tried to connect to the virtual machine.
http://www.karlrunge.com/x11vnc/
It connects! But then Xvfb gives an error: http://pastebin.com/RVNcVYvq

If I run Xvfb independently, it gives a bit more information:
http://pastebin.com/9rdf7tFd

I installed Xfsrv from
http://ftp.xfree86.org/pub/XFree86/4.8.0/binaries/Linux-x86_64-glibc23/ but
that gives me another error xfs: symbol lookup error: xfs: undefined symbol:
_FontTransMakeAllCOTSServerListeners

I'm on the brink of having a GUI-capable cloud computer for free. Is it
possible to modify XFree86 to use different directories instead of /tmp and
/usr? If so, I think this is possible. Thank you!

[XFree86] ask for Xvfb

2013-02-05 Thread 孙广宇
hi,all
I want to build a Xvfb which do not write anything in /tmp. My problem
is the Xvfb I build is 4M large, but the Xvfb in sites is 1M. my Xvfb is
very slow when gtk_init() is running. I think some optinos should be set
NO, but I don't know. I want to ask if there is any information, just as
Xvfb.cf or host.def, that can help build 1.4M large Xvfb.

[XFree86] XFree86 for FreeDOS

2012-07-28 Thread Francesco Cardi
First of all I offer you my warmest congratulations for this great
project, I am a supporter of Free Software and am looking for XFree86
FreeDOS.

I read some guides that I should compile the source with DJGPP, but
others say it is not done then all you need to really run XFree85 on
FreeDOS.

There is this really possible?

greetings

[XFree86] Help turning off Mouse Zapping

2012-06-27 Thread zhishen99
Hey. I figured that this must have been a Gnome issue, but I find it on
KDE and other desktops. They all seem to have active corners and edges
nowadays. Whenever my mouse gets close to the corners or edges of the
screen, it magically gets a mind of its own and flies off to the corner
or sides. This is extremely annoying and makes it difficult to use my
applications.

I've tried using different mice, but it still occurs with my two
bluetooth mice and ,yone PS/2 mouse. I've tried changing the mouse
sensativities.

Since this happens with Gnome, KDE4, LXDE, Mate, Trinity all to some
degree, I think that this must be an X issue under the hood. Of course,
if it's a feature, I must presume that it was in response to Gnome/KDE
soliciting it. Regardless, I'm not happy dealing with a mouse with a
mind of its own.

I didn't have this problem on Fedora 14. But, I finally realized that
F14 was effectively at end-of-life, and was forced to upgrade to Fedora
17. And, now, this behaviour is happening all the time. Can someone
please tell me why this is happening and how to turn it off.

Many thanks!

The process ID assocated with a window is not something an X11 server (and
therefore xwininfo) is aware of, in part because the client that created
the window is not necessarily running on the same system as the X11
server. Indeed, process IDs are an OS corcern, not an X11 one.

You might be able to find suggestions towards what you are looking for
through a Google (or Yahoo, etc.) search.

BadAlloc normally indicates an inability to malloc() the space. A 64K x
64K 32-bit pixmap would require 128GB which would need to be provided by
a combination of real memory and swap space.

 Marc.

Thanks.
I've just been looking at the x11 protocol and xpixmaps width/height is
stored as 16-bit unsigned int (CARD16.) Anyways, it just makes sense to
run out of memory for really huge pixmpas.

[XFree86] Is there a defined xpixmap width limit?

2011-04-21 Thread Emmanuel Thomas-Maurin
Good day list!

I've been searching for this for a while but, so far, it's still unclear
to me : Is there a width and height limit for pixmaps? Widht / height
type is int but I'm wondering what's the maximum supported values.

I'm using GTK and I know GDK pixmaps and windows can't be wider than
65535. But I got a crash in a GTK app when trying to create a big
pixmap, less wide than 65535 but wider than 32767:

The program 'my_app' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.

So my question is: Is it an 'out of memory' error (returned by malloc)
or a width value above a defined limit?

Mainly, I'd like to know if this is documented somewhere.

I can provide an example programme that reproduces the issue.

Thanks in advance for any hints.

First, it would seem that the CDEBUGFLAGS assignment needs to be inserted

Secondly, the compiler says Internal error: Killed, which would seem to

imakemdep.h:835:34: error: linux/utsrelease.h: No such

No mainline kernel source tarball contains
include/linux/version.h, nor
include/linux/utsrelease.h.  They are both generated by
the kernel build process, but the latter only after
2.6.17.  But the version.h included here advertises a
kernel version of 2.6.29.  See ...

http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=63104eec234bdecb55fd9c15467ae00d0a3f42ac

Therefore, the toolchain tarball was misgenerated in that
it does not also contain utsrelease.h.  Likely an
oversight.  Please report this problem to CodeSourcery
and see what they say.

This is the reply I got from code sourcery
My Debian desktop system also has linux/version.h but no
utsrelease.h.  I also checked upstream GIT kernel sources, and while
both headers are built only version.h is installed
(include/linux/Kbuild:objhdr-y).  CodeSourcery's current tools use the
recommended make headers_install to distribute kernel headers.

Are you trying to build a userspace server or a kernel module?
utsrelease.h might be available for kernel modules, which require a
build tree.

http://www.codesourcery.com/archives/arm-gnu/msg02922.html

Hummm. That's a good point. Looking deeper, this string isn't even used,
nor is it generated in the non-cross-compile case.

I'll get back to you.

Please use the following instead of the previous change ...

*** cvs/xc/config/imake/imakemdep.h Mon Jun 11 08:30:00 2007

This will cause the release string to be nullified, which is what would

1. Please help me to solve the above issue

It seems likely that the bridge at 0:2:0 is not, in reality, forwarding I/O
transactions to bus 1 because the I/O enable bit in its command register is
off. The output from `scanpci -v` would confirm this.

In any case, I strongly suspect that 0xf2000xxx I/O range to be completely
useless to the Lynx3DM board. As such, you have a system whose designers
wrong-headedly decided to cripple PCI I/O.

Your options seem to be ...

1) Hack the driver to not reference fixed I/O resources (likely in the
0x3B0-0x3DF range). Such a change would not be accepted unless it was
   contolled by an option.
2) Replace the Lynx3DM with a board that does not need VGA resources.

2. I have another query.. If suppose i want to access the io reg from the
xfree driver shall i use the addr 0xf200 directly or any io remapping is
required for 0xf200? if required please help me how to do it ..

I've already pointed you to xf86EnableIO() in os-support/linux/lnx_video.c.
But I really don't think relocating the driver's I/O to 0xf200 will solve
anything.

The server closes stdout as part of its initialisation. You could use
stderr instead, but it is preferable to use the xf86Msg() family of
functions. These are documented in section 18.1 of the DESIGN document.

Still, I could not find where my video driver access bad area.
As said earlier iam using the PMC graphics card along with a base board.

The server closes stdout as part of its initialisation. You could use
stderr instead, but it is preferable to use the xf86Msg() family of
functions. These are documented in section 18.1 of the DESIGN document.

Still, I could not find where my video driver access bad area.

As said earlier iam using the PMC graphics card along with a base board.
while integrating the frame buffer driver for the graphics, based on
our architecture
FOR I/o READ/WRITE ACCESS I should use as
   outb(val,port) as outb(val, 0xF200+port)
   inb(val,port) as inb(val, 0xF200+ port)

I have modified the direct I/O accessing in the xfree in my video driver
...
Shall i need to modify the same in compiler.h inside
programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/common ??

I suspect the problem is closely related to I/o issue only

I have attached the log file and the serial port messages for ur
reference ..

Please shed me some light to solve the issue..

For this architecture, compiler.h offsets all PCI I/O by ioBase, which in
turn is set by xf86EnableIO() in os-support/linux/lnx_video.c

A simple `make` in the video driver's directory should suffice.

[XFree86] Xnest Font Server setting

2008-06-14 Thread Girish Hilage
Hi,

I am trying to connect to XServer using Xnest as follows :

Xnest :1 -kb -terminate -name -query X_SERVER_IP -geometry 1280x969
-fp tcp/FONT_SERVER_IP:7100

but I can only see a blank window which vanishes within a fraction of a
second.
The error I see is : could not open default font 'fixed'.

Now, if I use,

Xnest :1 -kb -terminate -name -query X_SERVER_IP
-geometry 1280x969
-fp
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cursor/,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/arkpandora,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/TTF,/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc

then I can successfully connect to X and can see Xnext login window.

Now, if I run the first command again then this time it works fine
without any error.

Is there any reason why it did not work if I tried only
FONT_SERVER_IP:7100 before specifying all the font paths and it worked
after specifying font paths? Does this have anything to do with caching?

Regards,
Girish

[XFree86] Prepress Forum Workflow, Want to use XFree86?

2008-04-17 Thread prepress
Hello,

I run a prepress forum and am working on a special project using
XFree86. The Sample Implementation of X11 (SI) comes with a large number
of standard bitmap fonts, including the `fixed' family, and bitmap
versions of Courier, Times, Helvetica and some members of the Lucida
family. In the SI, these fonts are provided in the ISO 8859-1 encoding
(ISO Latin Western-European).

My question is this. If I want to add to the bitmap fonts in XFree86 for
prepress and graphic design work, how do i go about doing that? Is there
a font manager? where can I find information about using this in a font
management intensive way, like with prepress workflow? Any direction would
be helpful. Thank You.

[XFree86] termcap Library Error

Dear Team,

I downloaded Xfree86-4.5.0. The build fails indicating that it cannot
find termcap library.

In xc/lib folder, I do not find termcap folder containing sources.
Other libraries are present along with their sources.

Do I need to download termcap sources separately and build in the form
of library.

2008-03-29 Thread Hu Changchun

Hi everyone,
I wanted to build XFree86 4.7.0 on FreeBSD 7.0, but failed, either i386
or amd64 version. Sorry I've deleted the world.log, it seemed that an
error about SharedDriModuleTarget in Mesa/dri/gamma/Makefile.

Could anyone help me?
Thanks.

Yes, it would be a SuSe rpm.

Well, I managed to find xinetd-2.3.14-32.x86_64.rpm. I had to use the
--replacefiles and --replacepkgs options to force the install. The problem
is the same.

Sigh. How people can go on tangents like this will always amaze me.
(xinetd has nothing at all to do with X.)

The package you should reinstall is given by ...

rpm -q -f /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

... or ...

rpm -q -f /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc

... whichever file exists.

rpm -q -f /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc works, but does not fix the problem.

No, of course not. But it does tell you which package needs to be
reinstalled. Find the corresponding RPM and do ...

rpm -Uf rpmname

I didn't go off on a tangent as much as a typo. In any event, is there is
bug-free way to do the Xfree86 installation from scratch? Getting this to
work by some patch is simply a poor solution to an installation bug.

Also note, I entered kde in one of the terminal windows to force it to start.
I get an error message could not start kstartupconfig. Check your
installation. So I gather the Xfree86 installation caused this problem since
the KDE enviroment was working fine until I installed xfree86.

When you installed XFree86, it replaced your previously installed window
manager setup with a default one that invokes twm. Thus re-installing
XFree86 won't help.

[XFree86] new installation: KDE no longer starts

2008-03-25 Thread gary
I set up suse 10.2 on an X64 box. To use the latest ATI drivers, X86free
is required. The Xfree86 installation went well. However, when I boot
the PC, I no longer get the KDE environment. Rather, I get a simple
Xwindows interface. Any suggestions?

I can't saw for sure about SuSe, but you probably need to reinstall that
one of its packages that supplied /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc or
/usr/X11/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc. See rpm(8) to figure out which package
that would be, and how to reinstall it.

[XFree86] Planning Stage - Community Input Request

2008-02-21 Thread John A. Little

originally sent from incorrect email address

Dear Friends,

At this time a new operating system for x86 massively parallel systems is being
developed for a grant from the National Institute of Science. The OS allows
free rendering of real-time brain behaviors in the operating room. Since it is
not based on Linux or any other operating system designed for a windowing
client (desktop) we are in need of a way to port an implementation of X to
simply be portable c/c++ calls that have no external dependencies. This
real-time system gets it's start as a raw kernel over the x64 implementation of
AMD and Intel processors in (currently) 4, 8, and 32-cpu machines. Since the
nature of the project is to use commodity hardware with a light but
component-standardized OS as it's infrastructure, X is best :)

The question has now become, which project may best fit this bill? A
methodology of keeping it simple, straight-forward, light-weight, fast,
hardware independent (best to simply output a bitmap to a memory buffer and let
another driver place it on the screen), and so forth should help drive the
decision. If possible, ports of additional graphical toolsets such as Mesa32,
GLUT, VRML, and others should be able to use the implementation or be adapted
to it.

Thus, we turn to you, the community of knowledge-base experts, to get an
opinion of how to proceed. Questions fielded generously, credit given where
due, and appreciation to all of you. Please respond privately or to the group
as etiquette dictates.

Many Thanks and Warm Regards,
John

Hi Kundu,

Try the following format while starting Xfbdev

*Xfbdev* [*:display*]** [*option*...]**

in options give *-2button* or *-3button* to emulate 2 or three button
mouse .

Best of luck.

Sorry, I've rather misled you. I don't use atyfb at all.

However, now that you have some kind of display, please send me a

BTW, I've managed to synchronize my screen. I've overridden pATI-LCDClock
and used Option LCDSync in XF86Config (although I don't know for certain
what it means). It seems to work, but XFree86 still corrupts console mode
(i.e. after X server shutdown, all local ttys are in unusable state). And I
haven't found the reason why clock values are set wrong.

And one more question. This is the part of atimode.c:
-
static void
ATISwap

   int iScreen,
   ATIPtr pATI,
   ATIHWPtr pATIHW,
   Bool ToFB

* restoring its own video memory contents.
*/
   if (pATIHW-crtc != ATI_CRTC_VGA) return;

I don't use kernel framebuffer, so I think my console mode isn't accelerated.
But at this point, pATIHW-crtc is ATI_CRTC_MACH64. May it be the reason that
my console is not restored on exit? Is this the only method to restore video
state?

That pATIHW-crtc == ATI_CRTC_MACH64 at that point is proof positive that
you are lying to me WRT to not using atyfb.

Right, that was the intent. Thanks for testing it.

You probably need to create a /dev/mouse symbolic link that point to
your actual mouse device.

[XFree86] XFree86 4.3 question

2008-01-08 Thread Willi Lohmann
Would anyone know if XFree86-4.3.0-62.EL had problems with
XFillRectangle and newly drawn bitmaps in RHEL 3?

I have an application that draws rectangles into bitmaps (depth 1
pixmaps). These bitmaps are set as the stipple bitmap within
corresponding full color GCs for a full color pixmap. The intent is to
use XFillRectangle to stamp each bitmap into the pixmap with the display
being the rectangle.

This works fine in RHEL 4 with xorg-X11-6.8.2-1.EL.13.36 and not so fine
with RHEL 3 with XFree86-4.3.0-62.EL. On RHEL 3, only some of the
bitmaps appear in the final display. I figure the bitmaps are good,
because I substitute XCopyPlane for XFillRectangle and the missing
bitmaps will appear. I'd use XCopyPlane but it is way to slow for the
amount of drawing I'm doing (literally billions of rectangles).

Since it works in the one case, I'm hoping I'm just missing something
simple like an initialization. But if there's a bug in release, I'll
have to look at other options.

(Also, are there any good resources on X programming other than the
O'Reilly books?)

Thanks,
Willi

[XFree86] Palm Vacations, Vacation Network Website Makes Destination Planning Simple

2008-01-04 Thread Super Star
Palm Vacations, Vacation Network Website Makes Destination Planning Simple

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) November 27, 2007 -- Finding a dream vacation just got
easier thanks to the new Vacation Network, Inc. website. Launched November
20, 2007, the new site offers improved features and greater functionality
that make learning about vacation destinations and other services easier for
Vacation Network clients.

After eight years in business, Vacation Network has established a
sizeable customer base. In an effort to better serve them and provide the
technology-savvy group with a more efficient way to search for destinations
and plan trips, the company decided to overhaul their existing site.
Additionally, the new site and company anniversary provided optimal timing
for a re-branding initiative, including a new logo and overall look for the
company.

Since our inception business has grown considerably, said Teddy Kavadas,
General Manager of Sales. Our decision to develop a more interactive site
was based on our desire to make the vacation search and scheduling process
simpler. A good percentage of our business comes from referrals, so giving
back to the people who have fueled our success was really a no-brainer.

A main feature of the new site is the search function that allows clients
to search vacations by location as well as activity. For example, clients
can search for vacation spots that offer golf, skiing, beaches, and more.
We wanted clients to be able to explore the possibilities before booking to
ensure they're really getting everything they want from their vacation,
said Kavadas.

Users are now also able to complete a vacation request form online before
mailing it in as well as view excess inventory complete with pictures. The
new site also features a testimonial page that allows clients to share their
vacation experiences.

With the overhaul of the Vacation Network website came an overhaul of the
company's referral program as well. The new program boasts greater
incentives for referrals regardless if the program is purchased. We really
care about our customers. The greater referral incentives are just another
way to give back to our loyal customers.

Re: [XFree86] The Ticket Clinic, Accutane Side Effects Lawyer: Hair Loss, Depression, Suicide

2008-01-03 Thread Shentino
Ok, and what does this have to do with xfree86?

I'm surprised this one got past the postmaster.

The Ticket Clinic, Accutane Side Effects Lawyer: Hair Loss, Depression,

You probably know the drug isotretinoin by its trade name, accutane.
Accutane is a powerful drug often used to treat acne. Unlike other acne
treatments, which are simply antibacterial agents, accutane actually changes
the composition of the skin. Accutane causes skin to produce less oil, which
almost always results in a reduction of acne. Accutane is very powerful and
effective, but this comes with some very dangerous side effects that
everybody should be aware of. If used or administered improperly, accutane
can do more harm than good.

Almost everybody who uses accutane suffers from mild side effects like itchy
skin, chapped lips, hair loss, and nosebleeds. These are very minor compared
with some of the more dramatic side effects. Accutane causes horrible birth
defects if used while a mother is pregnant, and women taking accutane have
to sign a contract that they are willing to undertake an abortion if they
become pregnant during or directly after their use of accutane. Other
problems include decreased night vision, joint pain, and disorders of the
 intestinal and urinary systems.

Some patients develop terrible headaches that can lead to brain aneurisms.
Some patients taking accutane fall into severe depression and many have
committed suicide. The actual numbers are hard to come by because the
majority of accutane users are young adolescents, an age group that is
always plagued by raging hormones and emotional swings. When these young
people take their lives while using accutane their families do not always
realize that the depression, and resulting death, was actually caused by the
drug. Some people feel that drug companies should be held responsible for
distributing a drug with side effects as life-threatening as the disease of
 depression.

If you or someone you love is using accutane and is suffering from any of
these terrible side effects, please talk to a trained drug lawyer. Victims
across the country are filing suit with Roche Pharmaceuticals, the makers of
accutane, to gain justice for the terrible side effects accutane has
unleashed. Accutane can produce pleasing aesthetic results, but at a
potentially devastating cost in health risks.

The file is not included in the distribution files, but I don't (I

This to my eyes indicates that it's disabled by default, but I decided
not to put too much trust in that, so uncommented the define statement

That did the trick, but I think the config file should be changed to
make this clear.

[XFree86] Running XF86_SVGA on ancient Thinkpad 560

2007-11-28 Thread Eric Leung
Hello

I installed DSL 3 on an old Thinkpad 560 and am trying to get X to work
correctly. The laptop is a 2640-10U with a Trident Cyber9382 chipset and a
11.3 DSTN display. After lots of head-beating, I discovered that the only
thing would work was XF86_VGA. I downloaded a binary (I think version
3.x), found some XF86Config settings that mostly worked and was able to
get a desktop to appear.

The problem now is that there is a strange band that is about an inch tall
and screen width at the bottom that is fuzzed out. All other parts of the
screen appear to be OK. I took a (bad) picture of it and you can see it
here:
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x263/flyngti/tech/thinkpad560_screen.jpg

I know that the hardware is working fine since this laptop was running
Win95 with no display problems.

So...what could be the problem? Is this something fixable in XF86Config
settings?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Problem is evident in bottom of log...you either have no mouse or the
RH7 VM isn't able to produce one.

Try fiddling around with gpm or sumthin and see if you can get mouse access.

If that doesn't work, check your VMware settings and make sure that
the VM can see the mouse.

X is choking because it can't find a mouse...either the VM is screwed
up or VMware isn't showing a mouse to the VM.

I have a very basic question with regards to installation of xfree86 on

installing Linux-ix86-glibc23
The installation manual says that I should not install it using X11
terminal, my question is ...what other shell/interface can I use for its
installation? I am running KDE.
Thank you for your help.

Iam working on a SM722 based Graphics card

We ported linux 2.6.21 (took from the open source path sourceforge) on a

The graphics card sits on the PMC of the above linux ported board.
I have successfully integrated the framebuffer driver for the board

Now I want to port xfree 86 to the board.

I got the Xfree driver for the SM722 .

Can anybody help me how to install xfree to the linux 2.6 or linux 2.4 and
how to integrate the SM722 xfree driver ..?

[XFree86] Missing separator error when building

2007-10-18 Thread lars.bruun-hansen

Trying to build on Solars 10 SPARC.
XFree86 version 4.7.0

Using GNU Make, not Sun's make.

Get this error:

gmake[3]: Entering directory `/apps/XFree86/v4.7.0/xc/lib/freetype2'
Makefile:1152: *** missing separator. Stop.

Note that the word separator in the make lingo means tab character.

When I look at the Makefile in the freetype2 directory I can see what
the problem is.
There is a section that looks like this:

install::
\
@if [ -f $(DESTDIR)$(INCDIR)/freetype2/ft2build.h ]; then \
\
(set -x; $(RM) -f $(DESTDIR)$(INCDIR)/freetype2/ft2build.h)
\
\
fi

What make is saying is that after a target (in this case 'install') the
actions under that target must be indented by a tab character.
As you can see this is not the case because of those lines with a single
initial backslash on them.

I'm really a newbie on make and the circus around it so I do not know
how to proceed.
I understand that the Makefile in question is generated every time I run
the 'make World' command but I'm
not clever enough to follow the track and pinpoint where this goes
wrong.

thanks for any help you can give.

RE: [XFree86] Missing separator error when building

2007-10-18 Thread lars.bruun-hansen

I've worked it out (possibly).

In file .../xc/´lib/freetype2/Imakefile I've removed some
trailing '@@\' from lines in the section with the install target.
This avoids lines with only a '\' in the resulting Makefile.

That made it work.

It must admit I do not have a clue as to what I'm doing, but it worked for now.

[XFree86] multiple users feature (not remote, two-keyboard)

2007-10-17 Thread Peter Rader
Hi Folks,

i got an question about multiple users on one machine.
Its an simple calculation of my own:
1x PC
2x Keyboard (ps2, usb)
2x Graphiccard (R350 (AGP), Voodoo Banshee (PCI))
2x Monitor
2x person (me, my girlfriend)

So iv created 2 serverlayouts in my xorg.conf (but unconfigured keyboard and
mices - think both serverlayouts uses corekeyboard)

Sitouations:
Iv started startx -- -layout voodoo :0
The left(primary voodoo) monitor gets blank.
The right(secondary R350) monitor open up the graphic-mode, showing the goodold
system-window-manager.
... Fine i think.
i have openup the xconsole an type:
startx -- layout radeon :1
oops! Unexpected termination

so my question:
is it possible to use linux by two persons at the same time?
may is it possible to execute two instances of x?
if its so, what do i have to do to do so!?

There are a number of different reasons for which XCreateWindow() would
return BadMatch. Check the man page.

I have rebuilt X from XFree86 version 4.7.0 and the error has gone away.
Originally the last line of man Xvfb was

X Version 11 Release 6.6
XVFB(1)

but now it says

XFree86 Version 4.7.0
XVFB(1)

So this looks like it's probably a bug in the Xvfb that Apple distributes,
and the bug isn't present in XFree86 4.7.0. Still, if I could I'd like to
try to work around the bug: any idea where I'd find the source for

the original Xvfb, so I could try to determine what it's complaining about?

Quite a bit of Apple's sources can be found at ...

http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource

A followup on this, in case it ever bites anyone else.

Source that behaves like the OSX 10.4 release of X11 is at

http://www.opensource.apple.com/darwinsource/tarballs/other/X11-0.46.4.tar.gz

(I'm not completely sure that's exactly what is on the CD, but it was
close enough to solve my problem.)

And the solution to my problem was to specify CWBorderPixel when I
called XCreateWindow. Without that my call failed in the CreateWindow
function in xc/programs/Xserver/dix/window.c.

I don't know why no other X server cares about this.

The V4L X driver doesn't require a kernel framebuffer device any more than
its kernel counterpart does, so it should work with any other X driver that
also supporrts XVideo surfaces.

The XFree86, or X.Org, version associated with Xvfb should at the bottom
of Xvfb's man page.

(I note that on the MacOS system I have access to here, X support is a
mixture of various XFree86 and X.Org versions.)
