[xmail] Choosing XMail's group and umask
Hi Davide and list, a couple of weeks ago there was a little discussion on the list about the file permissions and creation masks. I was the one who answered: If you chmod your MailRoot 700, you don't have to care about these things. But now I ran into a problem: I want to grant some read access to a unix-group (e.g. mail) that can do support things like checking the logs and mailboxes and so on. No problem so far for configs and logs, make MailRoot group owner to mail and chmod g+r, g+x. But in the domains/ dir, XMail creates the directories root.root and 700. So my question is, would it be possible to add some feature to XMail to choose a) the gid b) the umask which are used to create new files and directories? Any hints, thoughts or other ideas on this topic? Thx, soenke. - To unsubscribe from this list: send the line unsubscribe xmail in the body of a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For general help: send the line help in the body of a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe from this list: send the line unsubscribe xmail in the body of a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For general help: send the line help in the body of a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe from this list: send the line unsubscribe xmail in the body of a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED] For general help: send the line help in the body of a message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[xmail] Re: Disable mail loop eventlog entries
Hello, | Can I suggest to be warning, not 'error' nor 'information' | .. I think it's more appropriate ... according to Windows architecture, the recommended meaning of events is that: Error is a critical failure, which disrupts (or most likely will disrupt) normal operation of server. Administrator's attention is required as soon as possible. Warning is a non-critical failure, which did not caused any widespread problems, but still requires administrator's attention. Information is a notification about certain event, which is part of normal operation. Situation was resolved the expected way and no administrator's attention is required. IMHO, what's most important is the factor of administrator's attention. Mail loops (when resolved) are semi-normal part of mail server operation and mail server is expected to deal with them. I, as administrator, can do virtually nothing to solve the situation - especially at time when the message is written to log. I agree that this event should be logged somewhere, to help diagnostics, but I would prefer it to be information only. -- Michal A. Using a rbl (and spamhaus is a good one) and others tools like RDNS, = GLST, AV, anti-spam, ... is not a problem IF you take care to advertise your = users (if possible before effective deployment date) and explain them = advantages and possible problems (and how to explain problem to their contacts ... = a reference page in your site can help ...). At this time I don't use RDNS nor Checkmailer domain due to too many = badly configured domains, especially domains hosted on access providers in = their packages, sheep hosting providers, reducing cost to minimum so = discarding any no absolutely necessary configurations like PTR, since they are not 'forced' by smtp related rfc's to do them to function (not mandatory). Or all Internet need to switch at the same time to new protocol with no = more backward compatibility. [xmail] Disable mail loop eventlog entries
Hello, every time Xmail detects a mail loop problem (which happens pretty often) it emits message to application event log, marked as Error. This is annoying me, because my system monitoring alerts me on failures. Discovered mail loop is normal working condition - not something which needs my personal immediate reaction. Therefore I think that's not a good idea to give it a Error status. Davide, may you please change the status to something less important, like information? Or allow user to stop emiting such messages at all? Regards, -- Michal A.
