Hi all,
I've since moved the entire xmail server install (binaries too) over to
a new freebsd 6.2 server and the errors have gone away. i'm guessing
whatever was causing the problem was related to that server rather than
anything with xmail specifically, so for the archives:

Hey all,
I've been noticing a strange, seemingly random occurrence lately and
I'm not sure what may have caused it (joy.)
I'm not looking for what is wrong so much as what kind of thing
triggers this error. I modified the source a little and rebuilt to give
an extra piece of info (you'll see
Compiles fine on FreeBSD 6.2 ^_^

The HeloDomain is used when the server connects to remote smtas to send
mail going outbound.
The doc is very scarce, yet confusing sometimes, such

Hello,
I don't have all the messages in this thread on my laptop here so

Hello,
Have you check the shell limits to be sure it's not doing something
crazy ? To see all the limits, run:
ulimit -a
open files and user processes are the numbers you'll want to look
for mainly.
Check `dmesg` for errors as well.
If that doesn't help, then:
strace -f -v -s 500 -o
What does `ulimit -a` say and have you asked your VPS provider about
what sort of limits are imposed on the VPS ?

Hellos,
I think this is the same patch yall are trying with, I couldn't verify
since the bug/pr database was busy when I just tried to look.

There is always PGP and the like..

It says that the header must be kept intact. This does not say wheter or

Hello,
But now I ran into a problem: I want to grant some read access to a

Have you considered the possibility of using extended POSIX ACLs to give

Make your MailRoot folder chmod 700. It does not matter what modes the
files in you MailRoot have then.
I saw that in the install notes, I was just hoping for a more thorough=20
solution. Having one directory's permissions be the line between fairly=20

Hi
As I said, there is no extra security if the files are 600 or something
similar (since your MailRoot is 700). XMail does not handle real system
accounts for storing mail (and that is imho one of it's biggest
advantages).
I'm gonna have to disagree. I know what you are saying, but security
Hello,
Why not installing xmail in a sandbox?
Good call :) I am planning on using a freebsd jail for it eventually, just
testing the waters right now. Allthough if the jail/sandbox is broken into,
the problems with the current permissions still apply and the cracker can
still read the emails

After work tonight I spent a few moments and put together a patch for xmail

1)substitutes the POP3 user's pass word in the pop-* log with (password)
2)Sets the umask to 0077 (for BSD, Linux and Solaris) so all files created are
done so with the permissions 0600:

Along with what others suggested while I was writing this.. :)
Is the bsa_filter script calling spamc or spamassassin ?
Do `which spamassassin` and/or `which spamc` match the path (if any) in the

Hi all,
One problem with using stunnel is that on most platforms all messages will appear to
come from localhost/127.0.0.1 since it will go:
sender - server-stunnel-ssl:465 - server-smtpd-cleartext:25 - rcpt
One thing to watch out for is that if you allow relaying from localhost (almost all
variable if you installed the server in some other
place than default.
Hope that helps,
