Is there anything other than greping the output of ps, extracting the
process ID for X and passing that to kill? If not, is there an example
script somewhere that you could point me to?

anybody got the latest Xfree 4.1.0 running on the Ati Rage Pro (Dell
Inspiron 7500)?
Looks like hsync is out of range, i.e. I have tons of :

(II) ATI(0): Not using default mode 800x600 (hsync out of range)

in my XFree86.0.log.
I also tried to run X with the XFree86 -configure

Well, there is no problem with restarting the Xserver anymore. Thanks to
the nvidia team!
But, on my i8k the Xserver crashes when switching back to VT7 where the
Xserver is running on. It
