[delicious-discuss] Discussion search

2005-09-13 Thread City Hippy
I imagine this has been suggested in the past but just in case...I
reckon there is a wealth of answers to questions I have on the
discussion list..but I cannot figure out how to search it.

Searchable discussion list?

  Searchable discussion list?

is
http://www.google.com/search?as_q=Searchable+discussion+site:lists.del.icio.us
the only relatively easy option for now? It pulls up the gzipped files
in the hits.

downloading everything and using grep is inconvenient and not
relatively easy for everyone.

If you use thunderbird (or some other mua who let you do some similar)
you can use with this workaround:
close tb;
make a new folder called delicious, in your profile
(http://www.mozilla.org/support/thunderbird/edit.html#profile), now you
have a new directory called delicious there;
Download everything from list archives, concatenate all files in one big
file, and put the big one into the new directory in your profile;
open tb and you have all the old mails in delicious folder;
search in that folder with inline search or use something like google
desktop to search through your local files.

Thanks for all your answers...I suspect that an easier solution 'for the masses' will be forthcoming eventually. I hope. Josh?

I'm currently working on a little Windows application that allows you to
- view the discussion archive per thread or message
- filter on occurrence of words in subject or body
But it isn't done yet... Time to completion in the order of 5-10 days.

Not really high priority for us right now. Delicious itself will take
priority (making it go faster as well as adding privacy, groups, etc)

I think that makes sense Josh ;) Although Dick your app sounds like a great interim solution...

this is the equivalent of downloading everything and using grep. :)
Tbird or another mail client isn't the best searcher for that
(Mail.app search sucks). probably better off with your google desktop
suggestion, spotlight or Finder for the mac users.

or save everything to a gmail account (or IMAP account with sufficient
storage space) and search that. My subscription ends up in my gmail
account. This solution provides access everywhere. IMAP has search
capabilities.

Anyway, the list hasn't flamed anyone for asking a FAQ. people usually
provide a link to an old discussion instead. It's not a horrible fox
paw, yet.

Mmm, a little more idiot-proof, imho. (I did it, so it has to be
idiot-proof!)
Not everybody knows grep.
I also realize that more of my friends will not know what i'm talking
about when i say concatenate ...

 probably better off with your google desktop suggestion

Unless i discovered that my google desktop don't indexes my tb mails.

Maybe something like this could be useful:

Regardless of the authentication mechanism, do you have any sketches
of the API ?

 Subject: [delicious-discuss] remote app auth

 i'd like to put together a spec for letting users authorize remote
 application access without giving away their actual password.

 here's a very preliminary idea:

 1) remote webapp links to, say, del.icio.us/auth?return=http://
 place.to.send.auth.key/
 2) user ends up on a page that tells him 'grant access to http://
 place.to.send.auth.key for write/read/decline'
 3) chooses read or write or whatever and is redirected to http://
 place.to.send.auth.key/?user=xyzkey=abc and this is logged to some
 del.icio.us database. (or maybe this should be POST)
 4) api will accept either password or the auth key

 thoughts?
