Subject: [yoper-dev] 3 Remaining issues to be sorted prior to beta release

 Hi,

From what I know we have 3 issues remaining before we should go ahead
 with the beta release:

 1) Apparently with the evdev xorg driver in user the touchpad stop working.

Now I was able to remedy this by adjusting the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf to :

 InputDevice Mouse0
 InputDevice Synaptics TouchPad CorePointer

Well, apparently this didn't add any new fix to my system. In fact, I have to
use the 'mouse' driver because the synaptics one works horribly. It would be
nice you would paste your whole mouse settings so we can make sure there is no
other mistake in between.

Do we have other peoples affected by this and can you or not confirm this fix
 ?

 2) OSS-GPL Needs updating to 4.1

There is still a large number of chipsets out there that are not
nicely supported by the currently shipped version of oss-gpl. Armin,
can you please comment on that?

Armin, I ready to keep on testing my sound card on OSSv4. Remember there is a
new patch ready at
http://4front-tech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=8161sid=1ee0a676164527285d58047cfadbdf3d#8161

 3) Medias can not be automounted anymore.

Using /mnt as mountpoint for fixed hdds may need further adjustments

I don't have the slightest idea what is all this about... :-(

I'll also see that I will get a couple of more xorg video drivers
compiled ( namely the radeonhd driver ) .

If that all works out nicely I'd like to go ahead with a first release
on next weekend , basically about 1 week delay from the recently
 discussed plans.

So what do you think ?

Pleople need whatever and having an official Beta release is, imho, a good
idea...

Regards! :-)

Hi Tobias,

concerning oss-gpl ...
What is your reference list for that claim?
I'd really dislike including likely highly unstable software, especially
something as crucial as the soundsystem into yoper. Before including it, I'd
at least recommend to run some tests.

The package will be created tomorrow, about 9 pm GMT+1. I will also test my
notebook whether bug 1) occurs with it.

Hm...

well, the thoshiba te2100 has a Yamaha ymf753 chipset - quite old and unusual,
I think. I'll contact the devs about it to verify the issues. Concerning the
Asus A8H I think it's quite new, given the fact it does have an intel HD
audio based chipset - and I remember the oss devs being under heavy work load
just for this driver. The 4.1 version might perform much better here.

I currently can only recommend to test all oss-gpl versions we got and check
whether the issues with a chipset have always been in oss since version 4.0
or have been included at some point (like the problems pettern had (has?)
with his chipset).

The output of ossinfo -v is missing, though :P

For further analysis I'd like to have the following information on all
machines that cause problems:

ossinfo -v, soundon.log, lsmod, uname -r

Another possible cause may be our compile flags ... I'll also build a oss-gpl
version in alpha soon with more conservative cflags.

If we're not able to support very new soundcards and the very old and widely
used ones properly, we're dommed to revert back to ALSA - unfortunately.
Before that happens, I'd like to doublecheck with other people though. I also
contacted draco linux a while ago to coordinate if any problems with OSS
occur and they also provided us the scripts they used to build OSS. In the
next weeks it might be very helpful to get a list with chipsets that cause
problems. Especially interested I am in cases in which the drivers cause
buffer underuns, noticable in some strange overamplified noise, distorted
bass, which I currently experience with the general usb sound device driver
only (which is labeled beta anyway).

About the other problems you experienced - well, broadcom and the whole
ndiswrapper approach is (forgive me) a pain in the ass. For the touchpad I'd
recommend to use the standard mouse driver, since synaptics seems to be
unmaintained (or at least seems to be not further developed and fixed in any
way). The normal mouse driver also performs much better in sense of decent
default values for the touchpad touch sensitivity - although it lacks some
fancy features like scrolling.

Btw.: Testing at an installfest was a very good idea and should be done more
often now. This way we could test with a wide variety of hardware.

Regards

Armin

 Hi Armin,

I experienced sound issues on an old toshiba te2100. I provided you
the output for ossinfo -v from that box.

At an installfest I installed a yoper 3.1 snapshot on an Asus A8H
 notebook. Was a near catastrophe :/ .
 - Touchpad did not work ( I think I got that covered now ) .
 - The proprietary broadcom chip is hard to get working and well,
 - the sound via oss sounded like the speakers were broken and about to
 die.

I am aware that we have indeed very limited options to improve the
situation around OSS . I'd just like to explore that a bit more and
see what can be done. It is indeed your call in the end ;) . If
there's anything we can do just get us doing it.

 cheers
