GNOMNE or KDE, I generally use LXDE
emerge ldxe-meta lxdm
(two packages, the meta package does not include the desktop manager)
then config /etc/conf.d/xdm to start lxdm
Gets most of the useful stuff without committing to all of GNOME or KDE
LXDE
lxde-meta lxdm lxinput lxlauncher lxmenu-data lxpanel lxpolkit lxrandr
lxsession lxsession-edit lxshortcut lxtask lxterminal menu-cache
...shows (on my machine)...

If you don't mind dbus, you should be OK without udev. dbus is
required
Hello list,
I've just finished (well, you know) installing Gentoo on a new box and given
it an LXDE desktop. Every time I start the desktop, whether by startx or via
lxdm, I immediately get an error box saying "Could not connect: No such file
or directory." Does anyone here

Hi, I have a problem with xorg-server 1.20*.
LXDM starts, but on login xfce4 freezes with the panel, xfce4-terminal
logo and a blank background. The mouse moves but no response to
clicking anything on the panel. startx as a user or root just goes to a
black screen with a blinking cursor
t, like I
said, it's just a matter of taste.

You're welcome.

X is started by lxdm, which is started by an /etc/local.d/ script. I removed
that, after reboot I no longer see X processes, but no conole e
with it.
I used xdm (although it looks ugly) because I need a DM that updates
the wtmp file and lxdm was not. Do you know if slim/lightdm support it?
I did some research at the time but I forgot.
