It's finally over
[by Tim DiChiara]

It's finally over. After 18 months of legal wrangling, bad blood and gallons of virtual ink spilled, Oracle has acquired PeopleSoft.

I told you so.

That felt good. I would be remiss if I didn't remind all my faithful readers that I was one of the few self-appointed media pundits to successfully predict the hostile takeover back in January. And that was a time when the takeover propspects looked bleak. Alas, my pride is only due to the rarity of my accurate predictions!

I wrote: "Mergers and acquisitions captured the market's attention in 2003, especially the Oracle-PeopleSoft saga (debacle?). More mergers are in store for next year, bearing out Gartner's prediction that "50% of software vendors will disappear by 2005." As for Oracle's bid for PeopleSoft, I'll stick my neck (way) out and go against current conventional wisdom: The deal will go through. Of course, if it does, Oracle will have the unenviable task of assuaging PeopleSoft customers' anger. That may prove more problematic than the protracted battle itself."

Indeed, when I polled our membership after the initial story, your reactions varied from indifference to anger to panic. Now that it has happened, is panic the most common emotion? Email me with your thoughts and feedback and check out our complete coverage of the story below.

Have a good week and happy holidays, Tim
