I’m hoping to use System Imager to install Ubuntu Images onto a number of developer machines in our environment but I’m having ongoing problems creating the install media.

My server is running Debian Stable 3.1 and my client is running Ubuntu Breezy Badger. Both are running System Imager 3.4.0.

My server unfortunately has no floppy drive and no CD burner.

I originally installed Ubuntu on a Dell Precision 340 with IDE drives and downloaded the floppy .img file. I had problems booting with the floppy so I created a CD image from a download I found (version 3.4.1) which seemed to work for my 340 test.

I am now using a Precision 380 machine with SATA disks. I’ve created the image, uploaded to my server and created boot floppy and CD images using the si_mkautoinstalldiskette and cd options. However, I have problems when I boot from the CD or floppy on a new machine with the intention of downloading the image. The floppy gives me “unknown keyword in syslinux.cfg” and when I boot using the CD, it is issued an IP address but I get a message saying:

start_syslogd

get_boel_binaries_tarball

and 3 rsync errors pertaining to our DHCP server address. It looks as though it’s trying to connect to that machine to get the image and not the image server.

Basically, what I want to do – and what I thought I’d be able to do with the floppy disk is to create a disk to boot from including the IP address of the server to copy the image from. So when the machine boots from floppy it immediately gets assigned that IP address and uses that IP address to download the image. Is this correct?

If anyone could assist I’d be most grateful.
