Hi Bernard,

Thanks for your assistance so far on this. I’m attaching the output of lsmod on my machine. I now have systemconfigurator 2.2.2-2 on both client and server. I’ve done the si_prepareclient and si_getimage as normal. When I do the si_mkautoinstallcd I get and list of “available flavors” but if I pick anything other than standard I get an error message – “couldn’t copy /usr/share/systemimager/boot/i386/c-ubuntu380good/initrd.img to /tmp/systemimager.autoinstallcd.temp.dir/mnt!” message. If I build the cd using “standard” I get a cd but when I boot on my new machine I get the same /dev/hda situation.

If you have any ideas about what to next next I’d be very grateful.

Regards,

Ali

Since SystemConfigurator is responsible for setting up grub, I would say yes, upgrade SystemConfigurator.

Other folks may have encountered the same thing, there may be some manual steps you can perform to get around the problem.  Try digging through the archives.

I'm still a bit troubled that SystemImager is seeing your HD as /dev/hda as opposed to /dev/sda, this will throw SystemConfigurator off.

To find out what module the SATA adapter uses, boot Linux into rescue mode, then provide the output of "lsmod".

Cheers,

Bernard

Subject: RE: [Sisuite-users] Problem with image on SATA drives

I’m running systemconfigurator 2.0.10-1 on both machines. Both machines are running Ubuntu 5.10 Breezy Badger with Linux version 2.6.12-8-386 although I would ideally like to use one of our debian servers as the systemimager server. At the moment I’m just testing the software and when I ran into problems with SystemImager 3.4.0 it was suggested I upgrade to a new version which is why I’m now using an Ubuntu machine as the server.

I’m not sure what module the SATA adapter users. How would I find this out?

Should I upgrade the systemconfigurator?

Let me know if you need more information. Many thanks for your help.

What's the version of SystemConfigurator you're using?  You still haven't told me what Linux distribution you are imaging.

It would help also if you tell us what module your SATA adapter uses.

Cheers,

Bernard

Hi Bernard,

I’m running version 3.5.3-1 on both client and server and the kernel is 2.6.

Ali

Please provide:

SystemImager version

Linux distribution version

Chances are, SystemImager kernel (2.4 based I'm guessing) recognizes your HD as /dev/hda, but your actual OS detects it as /dev/sda.  This is not uncommon with SATA devices.

Cheers,

Bernard

Subject: [Sisuite-users] Problem with image on SATA drives

Hi,

I’m installing onto a Precision 380 with 1x SATA HDD. I boot from CD and the image downloads from my server. I notice some messages at the start about partitioning /dev/hda1 etc which I wouldn’t expect to see as my machine is a SATA drive so I’d expect /dev/sda. The files install but when the install completes I am unable to boot the machine. If I boot from a grub floppy (to try to install grub) and do root (hd0,0) I get a message saying the partition doesn’t exist. I’ve checked and amended the /etc/fstab entries as per a solution in a previous posting so my entries are:

Proc

/dev/sda3          -           /

/dev/sda2          -           /boot

/dev/sda1          -           none     (swap)

I’ve rerun the si_prepareclient and si_getimage but to no avail. If I boot from a floppy with fdisk on it there are no partitions showing. Some of the messages just before I get the “I have been done…” message are as follows:

Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time.

df: Warning: cannot read table of mounted filesystems

df: Warning: cannot read table of mounted filesystems

Could not find device for /boot. Nor found or not a block device.

Use of uninitialized value in concatenation or string at /usr/lib/systemconfig/Boot/Grub.pm line 160

Does anyone know what I need to do to get this working?

Any help would be very much appreciated. I feel I’m very close to getting this working.

Regards,

Ali
