Theoretically the pci-automod (the approach used by SystemImager from 3.9.0) is the "perfect" way to detect *all* the needed modules. I mean, if a module is not correctly loaded then there's a bug in the kernel, and this sounds quite strange... could you post some details about your disk controller? which module are you using?
