Sun makes Linux amd64 java, but unfortunately they don't provide a amd64 firefox plugin. Konqueror however doesn't use a plugin for its java support, but uses the JVM binaries directly to display applets (which i've heard does work under amd64). So assuming you've installed the amd64 JRE, Konqueror might be something to try.
